An update for yesterday and today!
Was hoping for some more excitement with the exec, but it’s been 2 busy office days with loads of paperwork! It happily opened some post, but that was the extent of the excitement out here.
Maybe tonight’s going to bring more joy.

Ps; nice pumpkin ;) truly scary to youngsters nowadays!

This morning, my Executive was attempting to scare some small pumpkins--"Ok, who's first?"

Empty threats since these little pumpkins are just a small reminder of the Harvest. :)

So, Barry, I loved your Yeager shot from a couple of days ago. For this challenge I ordered a copy of the same book (only not a cool hardback version.). I haven't made it through the entire book yet, but so far it's been a great read.

Time for a good cuppa!

We're big tea drinkers here, and I love me a Brown Betty. But with grey skies and chilly winds, Mrs Nix chose hot cocoa.

Oct 31:

Used the Executive to carve my Jack O' Lanterns today. Used all three cutting tools to great effect. I've fallen in love with the small blade. Smaller than the little blade on a 58mm Classic, but with the 74mm handle, that little blade offers great control. So now I find that in comparison to the Ambassador I see some advantages of the larger nail file and the small blade. The Cable Tie Cutter is also pretty sweet at times. I still love that Ambassador, but the Executive may have some functional advantages.  :dwts:

Happy Halloween to all!

I'd agree with you Nix. After a late start in the challenge with my new Ambassador I have found it to be a good and versatile tool. To be fair most days I could do ok with a Classic so the Ambassador has been just fine. But the file on the Executive would be better and the orange peeler would've been fun for the challenge. So I'm with you on the functional advantages of the Executive over the Ambassador. But the Ambassador is still a good carry and just slips into the pocket  :salute:

I took this photo on the 3rd, but I misplaced my Executive this afternoon. I checked the watch pocket of my jeans, but the knife wasn't where it was supposed to be (I think it's in the car).

 I had a copy when it was first released, lent it out to I don't remember which years ago, and never got it back.  That's the county library copy which I got because of the challenge.  It was a trip down memory lane!  You'll enjoy it buddy!

October 31st

The last day of the challenge!

Executive YumYum Noodles

You guys must think I'm living of off noodles. And perhaps your right. The Executive cut the packaging for me.

Executive package duty

In the evening I finally received my package. It arrived at my parents yesterday, so I had to wait eagerly until today.
There is something in it I am looking for for quite some time now.

SwissMemory, Executive and Explorer

More on the new SAks later.

Then I was quickly off to get a garden shredder. We have a lot of plants and bushes in the garden, when we do garden work the bin fills up faster that the speed of light. So I hope by shredding the waste I can compact it. However...
I've been looking for these things at construction markets and garden shops. I'm used to these things being about waist hight.
Turns out this one reaches to my shoulder! And I have a very tiny car!
Unfortunately the Executive was way out of it's depth, disassembling this things is just to much for it. Which resulted in the shredder laughing at me, it new I would never get it in the car now,

Garden shredder laughing at the Executive

I was happy I brought my CT34 just in case. It quickly deployed the canopener to disassemble the shredder.
The shredder tried to fight back with 'one way nuts' but the pliers were no match for it. Within moments, the shredder was in pieces in my trunk!
The CT34 saluted the Executive and went back into my backpack.

And this my friends, is the end of the challenge for me. I really, really enjoyed it. The Executive is going to be washed, brushed and going to get a drop of oil. For now, it's going back to the collection.

It's a fine SAK and I truly see it's potential. Chances are, when I get my desk, the Executive is going to replace my MiniChamp, or perhaps accompany it.

This has been a fun challenge for me too!  I have newfound respect for this knife and what it can do.  I think I'm going to pick one up for me and return this one to my son.  I really like it and think it would team up well with a Spartan, Tinker or even a Leatherman.

Nov 01:

I'm sitting here this morning with a cup of coffee and reflecting a little on the challenge.

First, let me congratulate all the guys who have wrapped up the challenge!    This challenge was a lot of fun and you guys made it especially interesting and enjoyable. So, in addition to my congratulations, let me add my thanks for your companionship as well.  :salute:

I've completed the official part of the challenge, but, the Exec is still in my pocket this morning. Maybe that's out of habit, but part of me is also not quite ready to stop. I've carried the knife exclusively now for 33 days and a morning, and yet, think there is still a lot more to do with this knife and more to learn. The Executive has become a very nice companion knife.

I was motivated to do the challenge because the Executive "didn't make sense" to me. I wanted to learn why this knife was so popular and to try to figure it out. While I have come to appreciate it more, I'm not sure I've accomplished my primary goal. But that's OK, I have learned to love this little guy.

I'd like to hear more from some of those who have now completed the Chuck Yeager Challenge on what they've learned along this challenge.

Here are some observations on what I have learned:

-- Great size for EDC. The Exec slips into any pocket of pretty much any sort of attire. I've worn it with shorts, I've worn it with suits. I hardly ever notice it's there. Small and light, it seems like the SAK James Bond would wear with a Tuxedo to the Casino.

-- Didn't miss the keychain attachment. I filed this off the day I got the Exec, never missed it. The Exec always felt nice in my hand. I've got big hands and the small Classic line can seem a bit 'fiddly'. The Exec offered a good grip. Not as good as a Rucksack, but a good grip.

-- I did miss the opening layer tools, like the ones found on the Cadet. The Cadet makes an interesting comparison knife because it's also quite small, easy to carry, and light. On my kitchen scale, the Cadet (with keychain attachment) weighs in at 46 grams, the trimmed Executive at 45 grams.

-- I loved the large blade on the Executive. Thin and sharp, I found it could really cut above it's size class. Like other challengers found, the thinness meant it wasn't quite as good at spreading tasks, e.g. spreading butter or vegemite on toast. And the blade, at only 74mm could be challenged by thicker food items like a big sandwich. This sometimes meant sinking the blade to the hilt, not a big deal, but did then require a little more clean up. Here again, the Cadet makes an interesting comparison SAK. I've found it's larger and wider blade to be a bit more useful in general, but maybe not for carving pumpkins.  :D

-- The Cable Tie Cutter tool is a fun feature. Some guys found it to be excellent for peeling oranges. It works OK for opening boxes and packages too. This may save a bit of wear on the other blades. While fun, I'd rather see the space and weight allocated to a small opening tool. Maybe like the little opener/driver on the Rambler. And since the Executive has a small and large blade, there is always a sharp blade available.

-- Which brings up the small blade. To my surprise, I found that I loved, loved, loved this tiny SAK blade. Is there a smaller SAK blade out there? The small blade combined with the larger handle gave me the feeling of great control. This turned out to be my "go-to" package opener and small task cutter. I usually think that a pocket knife only needs one blade, but I don't think I'd be quick to give up this excellent secondary blade.

-- T&T. As much as I love my Alox, I do like having T&T. I used the tweezers once during this challenge to remove a splinter and the toothpick several times for it's intended purpose.

-- Scissors. What can one say? SAK scissors are awesome, and these are more functional than the Classic's smaller scissors. I used the scissors a lot. The Exec's scissors seem as useful to me as those in the Pioneer X. At least for my purposes. While I haven't gotten the Executive out for a fishing trip (where has Fall gone? ), I'm pretty sure that part of the appeal of the Executive for General Yeager, the fishing enthusiast, was these scissors. I've used SAK scissors in the past to trim line, cut knots, and trim flies. They're great. I'll get the Executive out on the water when I can.

-- The nail file is really good. Lots of file area to do good work and the file really works. I used it this morning along with the scissors to trim and smooth a broken nail. I meant to try to use it to sharpen a fishing hook point--maybe some of the appeal for General Yeager?--but haven't tried that yet. Regardless, the file works better than any of my other SAK nail files. The file alone might make the Exec a keeper. But what's up with that funky spade point? I used it once or twice to poke a hole in a disposable coffee cup, but, I think it might be better as a small driver. Perhaps it could be used for small Phillips head screws, I never had the chance to try that out.

So that's my review. A great SAK. I agree with Barry that the Exec would make a great pairing SAK to go along with another larger SAK. I'll be pairing mine up with a Soldier or Hiker for sure. But really, on it's own, I found it does everything a pocket knife needs to do and does it well. Maybe General Yeager was on to something here......

Congratulations to all on a successful completion of the Chuck Yeager Challenge!

Many thanks to Nix for his recap & review! I am also someone who didn't "get" the Executive and ignored it along with other 74mm SAKs. I purchased two Executives (a red and a black) during the initial discussion about having a challenge just to see what all the fuss was about. I was amazed at their appeal! Following the daily posts in this challenge had quite an affect on me in that I ended up purchasing 9 more of these small knives. Aside from getting four new and multiple colored scales (red, black, white and blue), the others can be explained by my search for better initial condition, more fodder for reconditioning, grooved vs not grooved and because I really like them. Although I am no longer among those who don't "get" the Executive, I am not sure that I can adequately explain its appeal. One thing that I really like is how comfortably they fit inside the pocket of my gym trunks--so much so that I forget that they are there!  This alone is worth having an Executive.

I appreciate the way so many shared photos and narrative, giving us all a close look at the Executive in action. Although I was not a full participant because I couldn't agree to keep my hands off my of SAKs, I did feel very much a part of the excitement of this challenge.

Many thanks to all!
