What is your favorite extreme lightweight knife?
on: September 30, 2017, 03:23:50 PM
Let's, for the sake of the argument, define extreme lightweight as below 50 g (or 2 oz for you guys stuck on freedom units (yes, that's more than 50 g, but everything's bigger in America)), that rules out standard, small workhorses like a 1961 Soldier SAK and most standard sized folders. On the other hand, it will include the Spyderco Dragonfly and the Opinel no 8 (45 g for the standard beech handle).

For me, knives like Vic Sentry, alox Solo, and the aforementioned Opinel stand out in this category. Three very different, but all very useful knives. These are well known here, though, so I wondered what your preferred very lightweight knives are?

I'm not clear on its weight but one I carry for backup is the K55 Mercator. ( not to be used during Exec challenge, of course :) )

One of my favourites is this one

Nieto Manolina 401-M in ironwood (30g - sorry, I don't know what that is in vintage units). A very affordable knife, but really nice to use  :tu:

Another is the AG Russell Ultimate Penknife. I have one of the Japanese peened versions (no pic, sorry). The weight on that is supposedly 0.3oz ...sorry, I don't know what that is in modern units. It's an excellent keyring knife, but I don't know how it compares with the newer Chinese versions with the torx screws (has anyone tried both?)

If we're talking more modern OHO type blades, the Byrd Tern, which is another knife I rate very highly, is only 48g/1.7oz. (:woohoo: both units  :D) If I need "more" knife than this, I'll probably go for a fixed blade anyway. So fo me, there's no real "need" for me to exceed 50g. I'd be very happy with either of these three in my pocket. I'm sure some of my traditionals will weigh more, but I do have lightweight options should I want them.

just like Ronald and OP, the DF2 and Opinel n.8 popped up in my mind as two favorites under 2 oz. Here they are, my favorite ultralight  folders next to my heaviest, biggest ones

of those that I do not own I'd love to have a  Benchmade Bugout, at 1.4 oz, extremely smooth and solid axis lock and grippy GRN scales
My toys:

MTs: Surge (2x), Skeletool CX, Rebar, Blast, Fuse, Micra, Squirt (3x), Wave, Crunch, Mini, Spirit (2x), Pro Scout, MP700 (2x), Diesel, Powerlock, PowerPlier (2x), PocketPowerPlier, Blacktip , ST6 (2x), 5WR, A100

SAKs: Bantam, Executive, Ambassador, Minichamp, Classic Alox, Champion, Farmer, Explorer, Swisschamp, Golf Tool, Wenger Champ, EVO 52, Pocket Tool Chest

I didn't know they made knives that light. :D
Seriously, if I can't carry a decent sized knife, I have only three sub-2oz knives I know of right now. A Case 059L = 0.68oz. Lock back with nail knick. A Schrade CH3 = 1.1oz. Liner lock OHO. And a CRKT Apache III = 1.79oz. Liner lock OHO.
The Apache III sees the most pocket time when I can't carry anything I really want to. Like going to a doctor office and having a batman belt and big knives will get you arrested. The Case used to be on my key chain until I had forgotten it was there for two years. :P
The Schrade is my backup if the Case knife breaks. The Case and Schrade are USA made(yes. The US has and can produce light weight knives. haha), but the CRKT is not, but has fantastic strength and blade style for being puny.
I bet I have more sub two ounce knives, but I'll weigh some more later. :)

My personal take is that <4oz is pretty light weight. But, I know location, work rules, etc play a major factor in knife size/weight/lock type.

For super light carry, I like the Gerber LST and the Case caliber lockback. They're the knives i reach for when I am ambivalent to a blade' s survival.

This is probably my favorite. It has been carried and used extensively.

The Al Mar Ultralight Falcon

About 3 inches of blade, 1.5 ounces and super slim :tu:

Some weight measurements of the Opinel #8 series:

Pruner model 50 grams
Standard model (green) 47 grams
Garden model 40 grams
Slimline model 27 (!) grams

The standard model with camo plastic scales is a heavyweight: 54 grams

The top knife came as a bonus with a knife purchase, other than Chinese made I don't know what it is. 42grms.

The bottom is out of a survival tin from Tops Knives
26grms.
Neither are favourites just showing them.  :)

I don't have a pic handy, but for me, there is a clear favorite -- the ESEE Candiru.

compact fixed blade knife weighing in at 1.7 oz, but this little knife is indestructible. I have put mine through the ringer, but it still takes a razor sharp edge with minimal effort, and it hardly has a scratch on it. :o

I don't have a digital scale, so I can't tell you the exact weight, but I have a couple of these Myerchin Titanium rigging knives and they are considerably lighter than most of my other knives, even with the marlin spike.

My TRE hits just above 60 gr, by far my favorite light knife, and it punches well above it's weight
