I'm imagining a small torsion(?) spring inside the pivot.

Yea that would be cool as! I wonder whether you could keep the strength in the pivot if you hogged it out enough to put a spring in it. Worth a look though.

I think that's what Evil did: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,20842.msg1092372.html#msg1092372

Perhaps external would be better then...

That's where the factory sprung pliers fall down in my opinion. As they tend to be made from cast components, and the inside is hollow, the load is focused on a smaller area of both the bore in the pliers, and the pivot. This increases the wear, and reduces the lifespan. Even in you improved the material used for the pliers, the pivot is soft, otherwise it wouldn't displace to form the rivet heads holding the two halves of the pliers together.

The only way I can think of to make a hardened and therefore more wear resistant pivot would be to thread it, so that it is similar to the old Victorinox scissors. Moving this on a step further, if the movable half of the pliers and the mating face of the pivot was tapered, you would actually be able to take up the slack when wear does start to happen. Drilling it for a pin spanner would probably be the most sensible way of driving this. The threaded section would need loctiteing to make sure the pivot stayed fixed relative to this, and didn't work itself undone with pliers use. This construction would also let you inside for servicing should the torsional spring let go / fail.  :salute:

Interesting thoughts...

Where do MT pliers generally break? For some reason I have a picture in my head of it being between the plier pivot and the handle pivot.

Most breakages that I've seen are one jaw snapping off (i.e. forward of the main pivot, where the jaw starts). That's not too common though, I don't believe. Usually from pushing a tool well past it's limits, or a defective casting. The hollow ones (with integral springs) do seem to wear too easily though, not necessarily resulting in breakage, but definitely imparing performance (particularly on the cutters)

I have wondered about a springy bar that you can flick out from one of the handles and it presses (whilst bending) against the other handle... giving optional spring action...

A bigger version of the Squirt mechanism would be easier

Interesting... I've never had a good look at a squirt.  :salute:
I'm thinking more of a way of modifying existing pliers to have spring action rather than designing whole new ones with it integrated.

Great mod. Looks like you're going to be one to follow on here now. So.......when are you setting up a storefront and taking orders?

Hi Guys,

Thought I should give you an update on my progress with this little project. I have now cut the two blades out of the stainless (Bohler n690). It all went reasonably well however there was a small gash in the part as the blade got a piece of swarf stuck under it lifting it off the clamping jig.

Now I will send them off to heat treat when I have a few other blades to go with them and see how that goes. I have a very slight bow in the blades to try to get them to cut nicely and I am a little concerned they may warp during heat treatment but we will just have to see.....

Any update on the scissors OP?  I know I’d be interested and am sure you could make a nice chunk on the side.

Hey JCast265. Sorry for the really slow response.... I have been really slack getting on and making these. I am making some steak knives at the same time that took me an age to finish before heat treating. Everything has finally gone to heat treat so I should be getting the scissors back next week.

I'm looking into external vendors to get these machined as I can't machine on bulk in the facilities available to me. Once I get some quotes back I plan to get some parts machined to ensure the quality is acceptable and do some testing to ensure I am happy. Once I have done this I will start looking at potentially setting up an online store.

Here's a thought: send a PM to Grant. Maybe you can start by selling the first units in MTo store. Don't know if you are both interested in this, but nothing like exchanging some ideas.
