Nordic meeting 2018?
on: October 07, 2017, 07:22:06 PM
Since we're all sick of watching how much fun and games the brits have in their meetings, I was wondering
if we could arrange a meeting for all the nordic people (or at least if there's any interest for such meeting)  :D

All nordics unite!  :salute:

Copying something I'd found on the Internet when looking up Altaic languages, with my addition of Greek. I thought it was interesting though soon discredited.

"to work hard", past tense, Finnish / Turkish / ancient Greek

1 uurastin / uğraştım / eirgasthin
2 uurastit / uğraştın / eirgasthis
3 uurasti / uğraştı / eirgasthi
11 uurastimme / uğraştık / eirgasthimen
22 uurastitte / uğraştınız / eirgasthite
33 uurastivat / uğraştılar / eirgasthisan

The 3rd person singular forms are virtually identical. Also, the Finnish word "kalabaliikki" has a Turkish counterpart, kalabalık. Please also note that in Finnish kala=fish+ and in Turkish +balık=fish. Coincidence? I don't think so!

And don't make me tell you what kalabalikia means in modern Greek!

"Kalabaliikki" is a turkish loan word in Finnish :)

Also appears in Swedish as "Kalabalik".

Apparently it was brought back home with the soldiers of Carolus XII Rex's army after the Skirmish at Bender also known as "Bender Kalabalik".

A nordic meetup would be cool, if I can find the time.
I guess it should be somwhere fairly easy to reach by all.  Somewhere in Sweeden perhaps?

A few millennia ago the Greeks invented the word barbarian for outsiders, because any other language than Greek was incomprehensible for them. Little do they know that the outsiders, more or less at the same time, invented the same word for the Greeks. It´s a perfect example of what is known as parallel evolution.

I've been a volunteer "security" at WRC Rally FInland a couple of times, and I tell you it will test your nerves! You have to try to tell a bunch of drunken fans that "No, you cannot walk in the middle of the road, because there are cars still coming!" That is if they even speak English -.- (Finns usually have more sense about walking on the road, usually...)

just regarding the "pineapple" thing, in most countries is called "ananas" or something similar because of the word's origin and etymology but here in Spain (I'm talking Spanish from Spain, not from South America) 95% of the people will call it "Piña" and not Ananas, and even in the stores, markets and when buying them you'll see Piña most of the time and not another word

So in that regard Piña (meaning that it is related to the Pino, the Pine tree in English) is more similar to English.    :tu:
