Compressed towels
on: October 09, 2017, 03:01:16 PM
I came across these a while back and have found them so useful I carry them in just about every coat pocket, in my car, bags, etc.   They are the compressed towels that when put in a small amount of liquid expand to give you a nice big hand towel when used with water.  I've also used them with de-greaser fluid, meths, white spirit, etc. They are so small and versatile.

The ones I use come individually wrapped in bags of 100.

it only takes a cap full of liquid to expand them

and you end up with a nice size towel when fully expanded with what ever liquid you used. These are supposed to be 10" x 7" but are acutally a little larger.

when you've got a dog thats rolled in fox poo they come in very handy as any puddle, stream, beck, etc is handy for expanding them

They also come in beach towel size if I remember correctly. They are perfect for the galactic hitchhiker who likes to travel light...  :D

I always have a couple of those (though slightly bigger type) in my carry-on when traveling. Excellent for anything from stained shoes to food stains. Paper handkerchiefs and similar simply aren't strong enough to be as versatile.

Someone had given me a few of those towels a while back and I really liked them!  :tu: I'd eagerly get me a pack or two but haven't come across them in a shop here.

Their only inconvenience (other than the ever-present possibility of a stubborn packaging  ::) ) can be the lack of water to make them expand. Enter baby wipes. Baby wipes work wonders :dd: in a variety of cases and a small pack isn't too heavy or bulky to carry around.

Edit: But yes, I like those compressed towels very much. I was pleasantly surprised by how strong they are!

I also like baby wipes and the disinfection wipes as well.  These towels I've seen but not experienced.  They certainly look quite convenient.

Has anyone switched from hand sanitizer to baby wipes or disinfection wipes, or even something like these although they don't kill germs?

Disinfectant wipes and this kind of compressed towels are completely different products with completely different purposes (in my mind). I use both, but in no way interchangeably. E.g. I use disinfectant wipes when I can't wash my hands, and with no water, these towels are by definition not very useful.

I use hand sanitizer when I cannot wash hands.  I use baby wipes for opps situations or as a napkin.  I use disinfection wipes to wipe things I'll touch for periods of time or things others have touched that I'll be handing.

Yup! Saw those on YouTube. I think they're a great idea for preppers. When the "future casualties" are buying out all the toilet paper at Walmart and the other stores in the one or two days RIGHT BEOFRE the hurricane or disaster hits, you can bypass that nonsense by having these.

I've used the compressed towels with waterless soap and that works ok. I prefer tea tree oil wipes, Tea tree oil is a natural antimicrobial, plus it can do a whole lot of other really neat things as well.

I bought a box of similar compressed towels (called Lightload Towels, size 30x60 cm) years back and have occasionally used them since. They are extremely multipurpose, from ultralight backpacking to different survival use - they are usually made of cellulose and can be used also as a tinder. If used carefully for washing or even drying after taking a shower, single one can be used for several days, just be careful and don't twist it too hard. They dry almost instantaneously, much faster than microfiber travel towels. But one downside is that they tend to stick on stubby facial hair.
