History of Phillips on US army, scouts and SAKs
on: February 02, 2018, 12:26:02 PM
Came across this interesting article from Knife World which explains why Phillips drivers were first added to pocket knives (the Devil's Brigade World War 2)
and from there continued to Boy Scouts knives.
Could be this is before Vic added it to their pocket knives (1952 ?)

One thing that continues to amaze me is the innovation out of the Pacific northwest. So many knife companies and ground breaking ideas have come from the Portland and surrounding areas. Mind blown

A U S Army ski repair kit. The pliers have a wrench on one handle, a regular slotted screwdriver on the other. I've also read that these pliers were purchased by Finland for their ski troops.

The US Army knife. (USAK?) Really nice designs. Proves the Swiss weren't the only ones making army knives at that time. I wonder if the US Army knew about the Swiss soldier's knife before WW2?

If the Vic Phillips was introduced in 1952, this one preceded it by some years, being introduced during WW2. Maybe, if Vic and Wenger knew about it, there was less need for a Phillips SD in Europe, or anywhere outside of the US. For instance, joinery in NZ was held together by those awful antiquated slotted screws until crazy recently, within the last 30-odd years as far as I can see.

US Army pliers, or USAP? :D

I've never seen a tool like this before, cheers. How ingenious! A tool that needs to be more widely available. :gimme:

The pliers was available commercially in the US for some years after the war. I bought one as a Christmas gift for my Dad many years ago, but can't find it in his tools. Believe a cheap copy is still made in China.

You are correct, the 10th Mountain Division is not the same as the Devil's Brigade.

No problem. 10th Mountain is kind of a Colorado tradition. They trained at Camp Hale, up near Leadville, Colorado; and after the war veterans of the outfit played a major role in establishing the Colorado ski industry.

The Devil's Brigade (First Special Service Force), were formed up and trained here in my home town in Montana. It was an amalgamation of Canadian and US military personnel who trained for extreme conditions. They spent considerable training time skiing. They were a fierce group of soldiers with an unconventional attitudes, many of whom went on to help form up the US Army Special Forces.

They were better known for a different kind of knife.......
