OHT Plier Jaws Gap
on: October 11, 2017, 07:42:43 PM
Uncertain if discussed previously? If so please provide a link, Thanks.

On my new OHT, there is a gap when the jaws are closed caused by the 2 flat tips of the jaws, this prevents you from holding 18g or smaller wire as I do frequently.  See picture below.

Is this normal?

Has any one filed the tips down to improve the grip? If so will he pliers close further or are they restricted by the handle stop?

G'day

Perfectly normal, mine is like that too.

More than my OHT pliers tips are like this as well  I think most if the newer LM have tips like this or at least I thought it was normal  Seems it would only affect usage with thinks like you are talking about and has never given me any problems :salute:

Both my OHTs are like that. I don't get what LM did that, but it is what it is. I think they thought it was a good idea,  but if needle nose pliers work, please don't change them! The funky tips don't even have a pin vice groove. I just looked and filing probably won't work(maybe a modder can chime in and correct this assumption). Handles bottom out as soon as the plier tips touch.

^ Thank you. That was the same impression I had.

I just thought it was important to have a greater mind to provide confirming feedback. .

I wondered if it makes the tips always meet if there are slight inconsistencies.

I think that is it... you can always rely on having full force on the grip, if you need to grab something small/thin. When the object gets larger it does not matter anymore. Not a pliers expert, but I found that to be a good design (the Spirit has that too).
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

For comparison I will include pictures from other MTs and tools with me presently.
SOG Paratool, top and bottom groves intermesh. Some precise tooling.

Rebar, a good fit as well.

Wingman

Wave

larger needle nose tool

medium needle nose

small needle nose

Now curious why the newer tools have a tapered gap from nose to Center?

It minimises the angle the other way. If you imagine that at a certain point of opening, the jaws will be parallel, any opening beyond that point is at a lesser angle than it would be should the pliers be parallel when closed

At first, when I read your reply, I thought, “huh!”

Then I thought about slip joint pliers, the heads are kept parallel by moving the head between the two pivots. The same for Channel lock style pliers and even Vice Grips.

The pliers hold the material better, applying even pressure when the tips are parallel or less. If the material is bigger and does not permit that parallel  closure, failure is more likely to occur, and bigger tool is a better option.

25 years in heavy engineering.

The more parallel the pliers are, the better the purchase on the material being gripped.

I have no idea why that would make me a housewife.

This isn't anything new. All my Leatherman's have this going all the way back to the PST. It's a little more pronounced in some than others.
