Oh and Welcome to
Wow, that pattern... Welcome to MT.O!
Lush dude!
Hello, gents. I've been lurking for quite a while now, absorbing all your ample wisdom, but now's as good a time as any to officially appear. One of the things I like best about SAKs is the ability to customize the scales. A couple of weeks ago I decided to create some of my own. I bought some "inlace acylester" blanks on ebay, traced the pattern of factory scales, and went to work. The inlace acrylester hates to be sawed or drilled, but it doesn't mind being carved. The stuff loves to be sanded and filed. The scales you see below were made entirely by hand, no power tools involved. Once I got the scales roughed out to size, I used progressively finer auto body sandpaper (600 grit to 2000 grit) to smooth the surface, and then Brasso as the final step to raise the shine.
