Antique store score
on: October 15, 2017, 12:39:40 AM
While on our way back from somewhere else Megan spotted an antique store at the side of the road so we stopped and went in.  Imagine my happiness when I spotted these two beauties!  :D

The Victorinox is a pre- 1961 version of a Camper and surprisingly all of the tools are intact and open smoothly!  The main blade is ground down a bit, which is typical for it's age, but it's not too bad at all.

The Mini on the other hand looks absolutely mint, without a speck of rust or any scratches on the blade or handles.

I'm going to list them in The MTO Store after I manage to get some better pics.  :D

That mini is awesome! Great find!
I love being able to pick up, look at in person, and feel the action of the implements before buying something. Ebay is a gamble at best! I work in an antique store, so I get to have first dibs on a LOT. :multi:

Awesome find... over in Europe, to my mind, "antique" means something like 100 year-plus, so I would never have thought of going for a MT hunt in an antique shop. As I'm heading for the New World right now, thanks for the heads-up :tu:

Indeed antiques stores in the states are more of a combination of antiques AND flea market type items(with some exceptions each way). The store I do restorations at sells a lot of true antiques and lots of non-antiques. Example: Twenty feet from a drum style 8' tall walnut desk from 1836 I restored is a showcase full of cheap knives. The broad spectrum of merchandise is why the store I work at has been profitable and has outlasted all of the other antique stores in the area.

You could buy Mechanickals one as well from Germany and that will arrive quicker and tide you over until the Canadian one arrives.  :pok:

The one thing Mrs. TJ likes to hear the most when I find something at a flea market to flip... SOLD.
I knew my wife was a keeper when she transitioned from calling it a knife thingy to a multi-tool.

I can absolutely see her point. :D

Antiques in general are a difficult and largely over saturated market these days thanks to all of the TV shows, swap meets and so on.

Pocket knives and camping gear are on the cusp of following suit but arent quite there yet.  Shows like Ultimate Warrior and Forged in Fire are starting to make some of these things a bit more mainstream, and I think the market is going to start to increase on this stuff.  Luckily there is still time to hit the antique store, pawn shops, swap meets and so on to pick up some of these vintage pieces before they skyrocket.  For example, the store I got the Mini and Camper at had a knockoff SwissChamp and a nylon scaled Spartan listed for the same price as the vintage Camper.

I can barely manage to sell the cellidor scaled Spartans for $4 (much less than they had it listed for) and I doubt I'd even try to sell the knockoff for as much as $4.  Meanwhile the Camper went out the door for $40 before i had the chance to list it in the store.   :ahhh

There are deals to be had, you just have to look for them!  :D

That is why I prefer trying to flip stuff I find for free or that someone puts out for the trash. Hey I didn't pay anything for it and if it doesn't sell, back out on the curb it goes!
