Leatherman Wave 1998 and 2004 - Not that much of a difference?

OK guys, sorry for another one of those dumb questions but I'm sure don't know what's going on since I'm not that familiar with the Wave "evolution"
I tough in 2004 Leatherman came out with a new and completely re-designed Wave, but after comparing my 1998 to my friend's early 2004, I noticed they are exactly the same multitool with the exact same size handles and same size tools, the only difference I see on the 2004 is a tab near the pliers head. Can some one explain and make this clear for me? Thanks!

Can we see more pics? I think the new style Wave came out midway through the year as did many of their tools over the year  You may still be comparing an OG Wave to another as they did change quite a bit in their 6 year run :tu: Here is a link over in our wiki so you can compare the 2 and at the bottom of each page there are some links to some cool threads here :salute: :like:

I believe the tab thing on the newer wave is what keeps the two blades from opening while the pliers are engaged. Please correct me if I am wrong!

Both multitools look the same with the exception of the "LM USA" on the 1998 pliers head vs. "LM Tool" on the 2004 - The tab on the '04 does not keep the two blades from opening so I don't know what's the purpose?

They are both very nice :dd: :like: Both are OG Waves as well  The ramps on the newer ones keep the handles from becoming loose as many of the older ones (with lots of use) suffered :salute:

A New Wave is different in that they have a different plier head, bit drivers, all tools lock (not just the outside tools), the handles are more robust and the tool is less slim than the OG

Both are wonderful tools in there own respect though :tu:

The tabs you are referring to in the inside of the handle is something I really haven't given much thought to or noticed for that matter :ahhh It was one of the evolutionary changes that the OG Wave went through before they redesigned it into the New Wave  When I was talking about the ramps, I was referring to another change that the Wave went through. It is on the pivots of the pliers (the early ones didn't have them and the newer ones had them added). It is even noticeable in your pics of the two :like:

Thanks guys, now I understand it!... I always though the Wave came out full redesigned at the beginning of 2004, I had no idea about the OG Wave variations and the changes it went through before the new and completely redesigned model came out midway through the year.
