I think you slide it down the fishing line (that's why there is a slot into the hole on the end), but the exact mechanics from there on are a complete mystery to me.

That was a good deal. I would have paid $3 a piece for those and still felt I was getting a great deal. That jack kniffe was a part of a series Colonial called "Swiss Master", which primarily consisted of SAK clones. I had a version of that Coast called the "MicroToolbox" and it was the best cheap MT I ever had (it cost less than $10 new, ca. 2007). While a copy of the Kutmaster MiniMaster, it's still quite good, and I still use mine occasionally. I've been wanting to try those German SAK clones.
