LM 4" early non-locking MTs. JPST PST PST2 Flair
on: October 22, 2017, 06:16:43 AM
For a long time I have been looking for a good deal on a PST 2 that was made before the pst II was added. Finally got one in good condition to add with the other LM 4" MTs labeled "Leatherman Tool".
The first is a Japanese PST that you guys helped me identify when I first joined, starting the fire to collect MTs. :) The JPST is pretty rough(file rust, used drivers, etc), but was the first plier based MT I ever bought(my first mt was a pinchy my dad gave me ten years before), so it is sentimental and nothing is broke/chipped.
Second is a standard PST that I bought at the store I work in. Great condition.
Third is a LM Tool labeled PST II in excellent shape I got off ebay for a song.
Fourth is the Flair, which I got for $5 with a broken blade and several people helped me on this site to find a blade and tools to swap them($45 Flair after all was said and done). The flair came with a half serrated blade, but a plain blade from Grant was a good compromise and seems just fine for the flair. Better for cutting steak for sure. :D

G'Day,

That is a Great Classic Collection.

I am a sucker for a PST II and carry mine often. I have to agree on the blade mod on the Flair, the PE blade should have been in there from the start.

Cheers,

Pete

Thank y'all for the kind words!

Peacant,
The addiction has been in full swing for a while. Thankfully I am financially limited. Otherwise I would need to build another room onto my shop to keep MTs. :ahhh

For a long time I have been looking for a good deal on a PST 2

Gerleatherberman can i ask you about the phillips driver on your PST 2 (people's eyes rolling), would you say its a combi ph2/ph1 like the offset driver or just a ph1 as on the older PSTs? Looking at it in your picture, it looks like it might be a combi?

Absolutely lovely tool by the way.

Sure thing and thank you.

The driver on my PST 2 is the older style. It is an early PST2 that does not have PSTII stamped on it. That is the main reason it took so long to find one. But, with that being the case, the LM Flair has the newer style phillips.

Edit: I am not sure what qualifies a combo or #1 only, but by examining the four tools, the only driver I see that wouldn't be suited for a #2 phillips screw would be the Japan PST from the 1980s. The 1990s PST and Early PST II appear to have a driver that will work fine on #1/#2 phillips screws. Please let me know if that is a mistake!
The PST in my first post is from 1995 and the PST II is from 1996. The Flair is a first year 1999. :)

Thanks for the quick reply Gerleatherberman... bloody hell that was quick!

Right, screwdriver supergeek hat on...from what i can tell, both the new and old drivers superficially look like ph1s, but the later one is actually modified ph2 that can do ph1 screws at a pinch, while the older ones are straight forward ph1s. The best way to find out which is actually which, is to look at the screwdriver tip from the top down - if it's a dot it's a ph1 and if its a fat cross it's more of a ph2... supergeek hat off. Sorry i have an obsession with screws and fixings... and appologies if i'm being patronising!

Cheers Gerleatherberman for indulging me!

You're welcome, Fuzz! And, thank you for enlightening me on this subject. :tu:

When I get home from work I will take some tip down pics and we'll see how they stack up. I just never gave it much thought. :ahhh

Hey Fuzz,
I almost forgot to take a picture of the driver tip. And fron what I can tell, the Flair, PST, and PST2 in the picture have #1/#2 combo drivers(flair driver is offset). The far left is an early Japanese PST and looks like a #1 only driver. The far right is a newer driver on my Fuse for reference.

When I found it, I thought it was some kind of fake LM or a modded tool gone wrong. Then I was surprised LM actually produced these. :P

Brilliant - thanks for that Gerleatherberman!

It looks like that from around 95 until 98 the straight driver had the same(ish) combo tip that the offset driver has. That middle straight driver of yours is a great example and so diferent from the one i have - there's definitely three distinct drivers.

Right... geek hat off...i shall have lie down now to calm down...

EDIT: After saying geek hat off etc - what did i do - went straight back and had another look at your pic!!!

You're very welcome Fuzz!
The dates do correlate like you said. The PST & PST2 pictured were both made within that time frame. The Flair pictured is a first year 1999 with the wonky off set driver.
Now you've gone and done it. I will be looking at phillips drivers closely from now on.
