Notice how much difficulty she has trying to pedal that thing once the power dies even on a commercial?

That said, I would like one :)

Yeah, the crux of all e-bikes, they are heavy (or insanely expensive like the Montanara Volta).

I was watching quite some e-bike commercials... for most it seems that charging your smartphone is the most important function, so I thought that movie was a refreshing break from all that hipsters in squeaky clean woodcutter outfit.

There is a good array of e-bike with front and rear suspension that weight in just above 20kg, that seems a much better weight

Yeah I don't think my one weighs over 25-30kg with a 13.5A 500W battery pack/motor. It's a folding bike though with 20" rims. Can still hit 50km/h on a downhill and has a 45km range. Oh and it only cost about $1800. :)

Thing is with these batteries, the capacity starts dropping linearly from the first time you charge it and after a year of constant use have around half the capacity from my own experience with three of them (expensive batteries, not junk). The actual cost of these bikes as a vehicle is considerably more than the upfront cost when factored in over a few years.

I've had two e-bikes. They're very popular here due to very high car purchase/running costs and small cities. They are an incredible mode of transportation (if governments don't kill them trying to milk them for profit, especially in Europe where they work so well and where it's most likely to happen) but the technology is still somewhat in its infancy as is battery power for general transportation like cars. I think that in a few more years they will be considerably cheaper, with a better infrastructure/design mindset and can really come to their own. Those Aussie e-bikes may be cool but for a fraction of the price you can buy a pretty nice new scooter which currently have significant advantages. Zombies permitting of course. :D

I know someone who uses an e-bike a lot. Perhaps if he used a normal bike instead he would be in much better shape.

Or maybe if he didn't have the e-bike he would take the car. Can go both ways. I have a neighbor that goes to work (about 20km) with his e-bike, before he got the e-bike he took the car.
In Europe, e-bikes are assist only, meaning you have to pedal. So, even with an e-bike you still get some exercise.

I don't think there are many people who choose an e-bike because they are lazy. E-bikes are expensive and there are cheaper alternatives that are easier like mopeds. But for many it means that they are able again to cycle.
For example my bothers girlfriend. She had several open heart surgeries (first as a little kid) and now has a pacemaker. Because she lives in a hilly region, she could not get around by bike, but with an e-bike she can.

I have looked at e-bikes. New, big powered ones like the B-52, and simple add-on front hub mods to my existing bike (a heavy, 7-speed Schwinn fat-old-lady cruiser). I'm with pomsbz on this one. I think I'm going to wait until the batteries are better.

I think I should note that non-pedal-assist mode is limited in the U.S. (at least as far as I know in every state) to something like 20mph. Above that, and you legally become a scooter or motorcycle, and need licensing. There's ONE exception, and that's if the bike is 'primarily intended for off-road use', like a mountain or trail bike. Then... gloves off, no restrictions. 50 mph is legal without licencing. You just can't LEGALLY run it faster than 20mph on streets. Laws are weird.

There seems to be a REAL press for improvement in batteries. I'm hoping for mass-produced cheap nano carbon batteries soon. Then things will really take off.

I'm currently looking into a good recliner e-bike solution, specifically for dirt trails. All I need to do is rob a bank, sell a kidney and testicle and I'm in with a fighting chance of being able to look at one. Buying will come after the mortgage on my children. :D

Imagine installing an M625 1,000 watt Cargo e-motor on a recumbent trike with zero help from Bafang. It was an interesting adventure. Still cannot hide all the wires, and there are a lot of them. Zip ties everywhere. CANBUS system, yet I can get up to 28 MPH no problem even with my load. I try to limit myself to 25 MPH max, but going down them hills are fun!

Not found a way to install the Insta360 X3 onto the trike yet for better photos & video.

Nice recumbent! I so want a nice one and not some nut and bolt one like I made, but I can’t put a motor on it the mrs would call that cheating! Yet I’d call it relaxing!

Now my friend upgraded his HP Velotechnik with a quad kit. Thing is slick! It has a shock absorber in the middle. Is so cool to see it flex.  :ahhh
