need advice on first rebar disassembly
on: October 28, 2017, 11:53:05 PM
hello all

Its been quite some time since i've posted on here. I lurk here all the time just haven't contributed in a long time(sorry MTO).

Anyway i have 2 leatherman rebar's. One stainless and one BO. What i would like to do as a simple style mod is swap the tools and jaws over. So what i end up with is stainless handless with BO tools and jaw and vise versa. My only worry is if i take my favourite tools apart i don't get them back together perfect .

So my questions are, 1) is there somewhere i can buy a proper disassembly tool?  2) what sort of problems should i prepare for?  and 3) Should this be easy to do?

Any advice is massively appreciated. I really don't want to ruin my 2 favourite tools.

Thanks all :)

Member Loki sells the proper wrenches for disassembly. He has a thread in the For Sale section.

Q1: see post above.

Q2: first timers often find getting the pivots back through the pliers difficult. Take your time and make sure the washers are lined up.

Q3: yes, use a lighter to break the loctite if needed and reverse tweezers can be helpful handling washers and tools.

Be patient, if something isn't working and you're starting to stress, put things down and take a break.

Holler if you need help.

What zoidberg kindly provided, with a small addition for Q2: make sure when aligning washers and pivots and pivots in handles that you take account of the fact that tool pivots are not perfectly cylindrical - they have flat alignment faces ground off the walls, and the holes in washers and handles have complementing contours. That is the case for at least some of the tools including the ST 300, probably the Rebar is no different.

You're welcome :hatsoff:. I use medium grade, that is sufficient for me. Bear in mind that using strong grades may make later disassembly difficult, but then applying some heat will help.

Where do the washers fit in the order of blades on the regular knife blade handle? Thanks
