Read through this thread last night.  Some really good work here!    :salute:

I've been looking at leather pocket slips online for the last few months.  Lots of companies on Instagram and Etsy making some nice items.  Most of them are US or Europe based and with exchange and shipping would cost more than I'm willing to pay, so I purchased a leather stitching kit (for half the cost of a slip) and thought I'd have a go at making some myself.

Here's the result:

I'm pleased.  The knife and light fit really well, and I had fun making them.  I do have some questions if anyone wants to answer them...

I didn't glue the edges together.  Do you guys glue before you stitch?  If so what glue do you like to use?
I burnished the edges where the stitching is with water and saddle soap, then rubbed on some beeswax based leather care product (I use it on my work boots usually).  I'm assuming having glued edges makes the finished burnished edge look way better.   Would it work better to burnish the edges first then glue and stitch?, as now that it is stitched I can't burnish the top edges.   Any tips on burnishing?

I glue the edges with rubber cement to seal it a little bit. I started doing that worried that moisture would reside in the seam and perhaps rot over time. It also hold it in place while I stitch everything together.

Whipped up a pocket slip today with some leather I salvaged from an old purse.

I don't have any leather working tools so I used what I had around the house.

Getting started

Rough shape and size

At this point I used some gel superglue in a few spots just to hold it together until I could mark and punch some holes for sewing

I used a kitchen fork to mark my holes

There

Used a small drill bit to punch the holes. I don't have any leather thread so I used what was at hand. Some heavy fishing line that I use for Muskie fishing.

All done

Fairly pleased with how it came out as this is my first time stitching leather.

Followed Steve's link, in the traditional challenge, to here.  Nice examples of home made slips.

I had checked eBay for some and thought that 15 dollars was way too pricey.  Went to à nearby craft store and gotà 1pound bag of remnants for 5.00.  had enough scraps for a lot of projects.

Great work everyone.  Those pocket sheath they sell online are great and all but making one yourself is both fun and rewarding.

Here is a sheath I form fitted to my AG Russell Arkansas Hunter. I used the knife to outline the leather, then, after the sheath was completed, I dipped it in a bowl in which I poured boiling water. I wrapped the knife well in saran wrap and put it into the sheath. After drying, I burnished the edges, and used a deer antler to shape the sheath to the knife. I finally treated the leather with mink oil to condition it. The knife now snaps into the sheath like it is made of kydex.

Keep in mind, boiling leather can be a tricky business, I have had sheaths shrivel up like a salted slug. Also, make sure the sheath is 100% dry before carrying your knife in it.

Thanks JR.

Here is one I made to keep my Trapper poised perfectly in my pocket. This is also boiled leather. The pocket clip was taken from a cheap knife I had. To hold the pocket clip in place (obviously just screwing it into leather would no work) I used a Dremel cutting wheel and cut an oval portion of the knife frame that the pocket clip screwed into. In order to ensure strong stitching that would not rot, I used waxed dental floss, then some mink oil treatments, and finally sealed it with neutral shoe polish that I heated to liquid. Like my previous sheath, I sewed a welt into the seam so that the knife is evenly held in place without any pinch points that would result in a "sticky" draw.

You should wet mold the leather before stitching the sheath together. This ensures you get a better fit and avoid those shrivelling up problems.

Great job on your projects!

The shriveling showed up when I boiled the leather. I think I should have squeezed it between pieces of closed cell foam until it dried.

Homemade leather slip case for EAB Lite and replaceable scraper blade.

Although it is only my fourth attempt at slip cases,  I'm quite fond of how it ended up. Made from an old leather coat.

Life are busy but manage to get some time on my hands while the kids are in school yesterday and remember a project I started but never finished. One of the first sheath I did was a horizontal one for my spirit x. I wasn't happy with the model, fit or my work so I decided to do a new one. I wanted a horizontal sheath that was slightly tilted and really low profile. This is what I ended up with. I carry it on my belt at one o'clock and don't feel it at all and have actually been checking if it is still there and because it's tilted it's not in the way putting my phone in and out of the pocket.

I did some more finishing and fixed the belt holes after the pics were taken

It looks a bit bulky but that's not what it looks like or feel in real life
