Leatherman Surge, really tight tools in one handle
on: November 08, 2017, 04:02:45 PM
So I have a Leatherman Surge.  Been carrying it for about a year now and the tools in the one handle are really hard to unfold.  The side with the two straight screw drive blades and the awl.  I thought it would loosen up with use but it has not.  The other side was tight when the tool was new but with use it has become pretty usable.

I assuming I can I just loosen the male/female pivot bolt?  Is there a better way?  If loosening the pivot bolt is the best way, what size tamper resistant Torx bit is it? I will need to order two since all my Torx bits are the regular version.   I assume there is some thread locker in there?  Some of the anti-vibe version or will I have to completely take it apart and reapply?

I'm not sure but I believe its safety Torx TX10. Someone will be along to confirm (or deny) that shortly.
What I really wanted to remind you, is to heat the pivot to loosen the Loctite.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

Yup. Security Torx T10. :tu: Loosening this just a bit should do it.

I picked up a set of Dewalt Torx Security Bits and a Husky Folding Tamperproof Torx Set.  That gave me two T10 to work on my Surge.  The pivots appear to have one of the anti-vib type thread treatment.  Loosening the pivots took firm torque but they did move reasonably easily but did not get easier.  I don't think I will have a problem with them coming loose later with use.  The tool are much easier to open and close.  Thanks for the help!
