Buck 110: To clip or not to clip??
on: November 01, 2017, 11:17:46 PM
It’s no secret that I very much dislike sheaths on my belt. For many years I didn’t even need to wear a belt, but older age has changed that. (More belly, less butt!!!  Haha)

I have a Nite Ize clip on my Gen 1 Wave, and on my Pioneer X. I used a P7 clone on a blue Pioneer I picked up, where the owner had removed the key ring nub.

So, now I have this wonderful Buck 110. I bought it a month ago for $27 from Walmart, but at that price it came with a nylon sheath. While it is well made and the knife fits well, the belt loop is such that the sheath rides high on my hip. That allows the upper part to dig into my side.

So off to eBay I went and sourced a nice vintage leather sheath. Ride nice and low. However, when wearing to work, where I have to set in new cars a lot, the lower riding sheath catches on the seats as I set down.

This brings me to my original question for this post...

To clip or not to clip the 110?

Here’s what it will look like. Thoughts?  Similar experiences?

I'd say try a horizontal sheath first. It might solve your issues. If you don't like them, I'd say to try a sheath with a clip or a snap-on loop, so you can put it on and take it off your belt easily.

I don't think the 110 would look good with a clip.

Still, your knife, your call. Whatever works for you, just do it.

 :salute: :tu:

Don’t really like the thought of one, but to be honest I’ve never used one.

I clip a lot of different things in my pocket by all my trads ride in a 4 1/2'' Sack Up  :tu: They are meant to be pocket carried but if you have your mind set on it then clip it ;) :like:

I make a holster that clips inside your pocket and your knife slides in, I'm a big fan of older lockback hunters and prefer them to look how they are with no add ons,  but I understand you wanting to make a classic more useable for you  :salute:

well I vote differently than most here... :ahhh

I see your 110 has a thumb stud already (modern knife feature) instead of the classic nail nick so now that it's semi-modern and transformed, the clip seems more appropriate to me  :salute:

The nail nick is there. I just added the thumb stud to try to make it quicker to open. I’m not sold on its use. I still have a difficult time opening it with one hand.

I think I’ll add the clip. It’s just on with adhesive. If I don’t like it, it can easily be removed.

I’m also looking at various pocket slips on Etsy. This one looks nice...

Love the 110s!

I’ll do it tip down. For tip up the Nite Ize clip would be placed in a strange position.

Either way man, I am down with the clip. Would be kinda cool if you can get a custom made one to match the knife better. Like something with a brass coating or made out of brass.

I really like the sheath you pictured.  That looks great.  That would be my choice depending on how much the knife comes in and out your pocket.  The clip is a good idea too.  DTT has a great idea about a "classic" looking clip.  I'm sure someone has done it.  Horizontal sheath carry is also a good idea.  I'm sure you'll find something that'll work for you.

For now, the Nite Ize is on. If I really like carrying it this way, I would definitely look into a custom deep carry clip.

Here are a few pics to make some cringe!  Haha!!

As long as it works for how you use the knife.  Worse would be you leave the 110 at home cause you couldn't find a way to comfortable carry it.

I actually bought this money clip off of eBay for a few dollars with thoughts of converting it into a pocket clip for the 110. Would take some work, but might work out.

Well, so far carrying it with clip in my pocket at work, it’s working well. I don’t notice the weight.

Good to hear so far its working out.  I am curious how well it stays in your pocket getting in and out of vehicles?

It has not moved out of my pocket. Keep in mind that I wear cargo pants so they are nice and loose with deep, roomy pockets.

Not sure how it will do in a regular pair of jeans. I’ll wear normal jeans tonight and see how that goes.

I know that my phone feels MUCH different in my pocket with regular jeans on!

This is really good news then.  Not a bad "fix" so you can carry your knife how you like.

So far it feels great in regular jeans. Not even close to falling out or anything.

To be honest, I can’t even tell it’s there!

This is good news. See, this is a practice thing, if all goes well I will be buying one of the Buck 110 Autos to carry!

I've seen those 110 Autos.  They are really sweet.   After thinking about the sheath thing for this knife I feel the clip just seems better.  I mean its a tool that you'll be taking out and putting back in your pocket possibly several times a day.  In a sheath it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.  I'm really glad you found a system that seems to be working.  Its such a classic and while most probably use a sheath the clip is a nice feature.

I never really thought about putting a clip on a 110 or 112 but I love the idea. I may just have to do this myself.  :tu:

The NiteIze clips come with a sticky pad you peel and attach.

Yes. It uses a 3M adhesive strip. I have pulled them off and reused with new adhesive strips and works just fine.
