Executive Lounge
on: November 02, 2017, 02:36:23 AM
The Chuck Yeager Challenge has successfully completed with a whole month of watching the Executive in action!

My regard has grown significantly for this very useful Swiss Army Knife--it packs big utility in a small package!

I enjoyed the month-long Chuck Yeager Challenge and would like to have a topic area for those who enjoy using the Executive to display its beauty and utility. In launching this topic, the Executive Lounge, I am inviting Executive owners to continue to share their Executives in action, pose them, or use your imagination as the mood strikes. :)

Here are some photos of my new Executives to start things off...

Thanks NorCalJim. I had fun with this challenge,  and even traveled with the Executive.  It meet some challenges I didn't expect to come up (like unlocking a bathroom stall that was locked from the inside). Now that we're into November,  is time to relax.  By the way,  I carried my beloved Explorer today,  and haven't even used it.

For most people, a daily carry is literally carried in one's pocket instead of located within arm's length as sometimes I did when it was hot. Since 1982, thanks to a gift of a Classic that I received, I have carried the Classic on my keychain until 2015 when I retired. When it is cool enough (late fall through a good part of Spring), I carry the Explorer in one pocket and frequently have another SAK in the other front pocket. When it is hot, I am usually in cargo shorts and carrying a MiniChamp II or wearing gym trunks around the house and the pockets are too thin for a 91mm SAK. Thanks to the 74mm Executive that is changed and I carry the Executive every day. Just in the last few days, I have used it to open several packages, including shrink-wrap products.

Yes, it is time to relax--no daily assignments to use the Executive. In the next couple of weeks, I plan to continue recondition some Executives.  I expect to have photos and will post them here.

Jim

Outstanding Jim!  I've grown to really like this knife myself.  It's just the right size for a true EDC...barely know it's even there but just the right combo of tools to make it viable for most things.

Thanks for starting this thread and thanks to all who participated in the challenge.  I've been a fan of the Executive since I can remember.  I'm pleased to see the challenge open some eyes as to how capable this tool really is.

Mine helped with changing a ceiling light.  The nail file worked fine for the Philips screws,  but I had to pull out the Leatherman PST to wrap the ground wire around the screw (don't tell anyone).

As is mine, Barry. Such an easy SAK to slip into the pocket.

So....when you say "mine", does that mean you've officially purchased one and are a legitimate member of the Executive Lounge? Or have you stolen your son's and are a sort of Pirate Interloper here?     :duel:

I ground off the Key chain attachment on the red version for EDC purposes.

I think the black-scaled Executive will keep it's keychain attachment, enabling me to wear it on a neck lanyard during fishing expeditions. I'll have to see how that goes. Might end up grinding that keychain thing off as well.

You have plenty of company in wanting to remove the keychain attachment. My own preference is for the keychain since I like to attach a simple paracord lanyard to my SAKs.  I have grown so used to having lanyards that I would definitely miss the keychain attachment.

I'm funny that way, Jim. Some models seem to feel better with a lanyard, some not. I have lanyards of one sort or another on all my 58mm. Otherwise, the seem like they might slip out of a pocket unnoticed. My woods knives all get lanyards, also to help prevent loss and make them easier to see if put down in deep foliage.

But the Executive just feels better to me with a smooth handle. We'll see. I'll give the keychain attachment a try with the black-scaled version I've got.

OK, when we last looked at these two Executives with the scales popped, there was corrosion and ugliness.

Executives - Pre-Spa by NorCal Jim, on Flickr

I had no doubt, that these could be reconditioned and had new scales waiting. I even showed them to my wife and commented how nice they would look after a NAFTA bath.  Noticing that she wasn't thrilled with exposed petroleum products in the house or garage, I decided on a quick brute force cleaning with Dremel and wire brush. Needless to say, the corrosion is long gone but the liner surface is scratched and not my best work. A quick sanding on the small blade with progressive 400 through 2500 and no polishing (this time) has the Executive in excellent carry condition with the addition of new scales...
