Greetings. Let us dive right in.

Tools needed
- Small ball peen hammer
- Small anvil (the flat side of a hammer or axehead will do in a pinch)
- Small hacksaw or razor saw.
- Abrasive like a metal file or sand paper
- Small pry tool for scale removal(I use a SAK can opener)

Materials needed:
- Naked victorinox waiter
- donor backspring phillips. Mine came from a 91mm tinker model
- a small length of 2.2mm brass rod.

Step-by-Step procedure
The following list corresponds to the pictures no. attached at the bottom of this and subsequent posts.
  • Get your tools and materials together
  • Remove the small button head rivet on the corkscrew pin. I used the saw. You could also use a drill or a file
  • Once the head is removed you can remove the pin by punching it through from the flush side, or by prying it out from the reverse side. I did the latter
  • Once the pin is out remove the corkscrew and slide the phillips drive into place
  • Next you insert the brass rod into place and cut it to size with the saw. The brass rod should stick out 1-2mm on either side of the liners
  • If you used a saw the cuts should be nice and perpendicular to the length of the pin. If you used flush cutters you should use a file to straighten the cut
  • Its hammer time. place the knife across your anvil in such a way that the bottom of the pin is the only point of contact. use the ball end of the hammer to gently mushroom the pin ends on either side. I use about 20 gentle taps on one side before flipping the knife over and doing the other side. Repeat until both side are mushroomed out and there is no lateral play between the liners. I used a few hundred taps. About 5 minutes worth of peening all in all
  • When you are done the pin should look something like this. Reattach the scales. I do it using a "TV remote thumb squeeze"
  • Reinsert your scale tools of choice and slip your new apprentice into your pocket

That is a jolly good write-up!

I've built three SAKs 'from the pins up' now, and your great how-to showed me that there's always more to know; I learnt some useful tips, so many thanks for that.  :tu:
