Hello from Dubai
on: November 06, 2017, 12:25:17 PM
Hi Folks. Just picked up my first Leatherman multi-tool. I looked at the Surge, Wave, and skeletool, needless to say since I am a newbie, I looked at the Gerber, SOG and Victorinox offering. I own a swiss army knife, which is now 33 years old, needless to say it has wear and tear, but still 95% functional. My hobbies are camping, offroading and maintaining and modding my offroad 4x4s, so I already have a bunch of regular tools, and the leatherman is not going to replace those, but it will save me loading and unloading everytime I need to do something away from my home garage.

I chose the Surge due to it's interchangeable saws/files, a few youtube videos on adding a 1/4" bit holder and a great youtube video on a stress test. I was just afraid of the weight and size, but a lot lighter than my tool box, and not a replacement, but just something that can get you out of trouble quickly. Also SOG, Gerber and Victorinox are not well represented here in Dubai, and I do like all the mods that can be done to the leatherman, and they seem to have more customers...therefore more people modding them, and repairing them too, and with the internet, that makes it a great brand to have.

Looking to add a 1/4" bit adapter to the leatherman bit adapter.

Cheers folks.

Welcome.  The Surge should be a great companion for whatever outdoor activities you engage in.

Thank you all.

just an anecdote, been carrying the Surge since purchase yesterday. Using the supplied sheath, this morning was having newer model jeep wrangler seats mounted to my jeep TJ runners. Needed to remove a cable that was snapped into a mount on the seat runners. So needed a plier.....and went back to the car to get my needle nose pliers and proceeded to remove the cable.

Leatherman Surge in all it's glory, was on my belt, and I did not even think of using it!!!!!!!!!

Welcome Van. Great choice in the Surge. I have an older version and love it.

I admit I'm surprised that Victorinox is not well represented in Dubai. I'm sure there's an interesting dynamic at work.

Victorinox is available, but the distributor is an old school business, and they have not really moved with the growth of Dubai, so buying one requires driving to congested area of old Dubai.

Leatherman, 3 retailers selling them within 10 minutes of my office, 5 online retailers too.
