My custom wave

So this is my wave..
Also, my introduction lol
My names Zach for those interested, I'm an electrician.
Had a sidekick for a few years, and never really used it. Then I bought this wave a month ago and found this site.. now I have sacrificed at least 3 other tools for it and it doesn't leave my side lol
Also carry a squirt es4 along side the wave.

Still a work in progress/unfinished

Current mods are..
Rebar head
Surge saw holder
Two keys for work
Rebar awl


Things to add are..
Punchdown tool
Stripper pliers head, trying to get a hold of some bear & son to hack up
Exterior scissors (maybe, I do enjoy my file)
Dedicated Phillips (a lot of kids toys around the house need a longer shank and my bit holder just won't work)
Thinking of buying a center drive to try and make the bit holder work also

The search for the "perfect"  MT can take some time, money & work.

Seeing as we have quite a reputation here as enablers, allow me to be the first      Have a look at the Paladin series of MTs, these come with punchdown tools and wire strippers built in to the pliers in the larger two.  They were specially made for Paladin by SOG, but were discontinued a while back.  They do turn up for sale every now and then, but not very often.  They are easy to mod, and SOG still sell various components to suit (but possibly not the Paladin-specific ones like the punchdown tools)

SOG has a wire stripper tool. I added it to my CenterDrive. Works OK, haven't decided whether to keep it or not.

I've seen those and have been on the lookout
I would miss the one handed tools of the wave though, but the paladin seems to have 'almost' everything

Think there's enough material to adapt it to the wave? I've looked at them and almost pulled the trigger, hard to argue the 12 dollars brand new.

I think I can make a good stripper head for them if I find a pair of strippers close to the same angle and size.
I'd use a Leatherman plier head and cut off the pivots and use them as spacers basically. Then pin those spacers to the strippers, but because most are offset like scissors, I would need to make the locking ramp into one side of the strippers and use the leatherman spacer for the ramp on the other side.
Most likely, though, I'd end up with a ruined pair of strippers and pliers head lol

Thanks, I was very worried about the blade exchanger, but it came out pretty nice

The double exterior keys was a pain though, and I still need to work on the little piece for the pivot, whatever it's called, to get it perfect, but I'm pretty proud I managed to do that one.

I'd love to see some close-up pics of this. I can imagine it was difficult getting both keys to fit nicely, especially the one on the opposite end from the pliers.

Really need to cut a new key for the bottom, I shaved that key down which I previously had with the internal tools and there wasn't really enough material to make a catch to open it

And the inside of the cap part is still rough, need to finish it up, it's basically just a spacer for looks. There's nothing to lock the key open, but I think I could make some slots in the frame and make a new liner lock for it. Not sure if that will weaken the frame though.

Nice - an external tool on a Wave at the end of the handle (circumventing the lock). I've never seen this done before.

Making a liner lock at that end sounds complicated due to the very restricted space... but for a key it doesn't sound as if this really needs to be done (?). It might be necessary were one to contemplate any other tools in that position though...

You're right, the lock isn't necessary for the key, it works great as is
I just think it would be a nice touch, but it wouldn't be easy

I also saw someone talking about using a ball detent, that could be done I think, just to give it the snap open feeling.

So here's an update.
Added the 3d Phillips since it has better reach for small electronics, and a dedicated flat so I could put a torx bit in the bit holder. I did remove the plier rests inside the frame, just snapped it off and ground it flat to keep the springs and locks. Also, put a notch in the frame for the bottom key and cleaned it up some, put some washers on it and got the right torque on the pivot. Nice and smooth operation

I'm pretty happy with it for now (put locktite on the pivots) so I'm leaving it for a while. Don't think I'm going to pursue the strippers or punchdown tool for a while. Plus, I'm gonna start on my wife's new juice here tonight lol
