moding advice: torx wrench
on: November 07, 2017, 05:44:44 PM
 >:(

So, a few nights ago, I received a new multi-tool that I bought with the intention of modifying.  I got my trusty set of torx bits that I bought from Lowes and started on the first bolt.  It was a T8.  After a considerable amount of effort, I really beared down on the thing and the bit stripped.  I didn't even get a single piece disassembled!   :(

Has anyone had a similar problem?  Am I just going about this wrong?  Does lowes make garbage T-bits?  I really thought I had invested in a decent bit driver set.  Now I'm just questioning everything.

You have to heat up the pivots to release the loctite. You can use a lighter or soldering iron.

What Steve said and also some pivot posts are keyed with the handle and only the screw side will turn.

100% what Steve said. You shouldn't have to use excessive torque - it's just a little screw after all. :D

+1 to what these guys said... about 10 seconds with a Zippo does the trick for me.

what MT are you trying to disassemble?

Put it in the oven at 425 for 30 minutes.

All loctited in every screw is now treated and will remove easily.

Don't go higher than 425 or you risk tempering the stainless.

For the stripped out screw use a left hand twist drill or a set of Vampliers.

Some models have plastic bits...
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Ok, cool.  Thanks Everyone!

I'll try the soldering iron first and then the zippo if I need to.    I'm trying to replace the hex wrenches on a Gerber Myth with some useful tools. I was not worried about cosmetic damage at first but once I held it in my hand I started to really love the rubber grippy texture on the outside so I'm trying to keep that intact if possible.   :-\

I honestly didn't even think of that, Its my goto for getting loctite out of assemblies at work and in the few MTs I have modded.

However depending on the plastic, 425 may be below it's melting point.

Though yep I might have been a bit fast and loose with that advice

I was thinking the same
and I wouldn't like using the oven on some tools for their plastic washers, pieces and components   :ahhh

OK guys,  It was definitely lock tight.

I bought a new Torx bit set on the way home and I decided to use the soldering iron to heat the rod.
Zoidberg was right, one side did not spin. I got a picture of the first bolt coming off.
Unfortunately, the second bolt didn't want to come off.   I'll keep at it.
Stripped the new T8  :(
