Attempting the Slasher badge this time.
on: November 08, 2017, 09:34:22 PM
Had a tree come down in Hurricane Irma and I cleaned it all up except for the stump.  Before I can dig that out I need to make room to work by getting rid of the roots.  I probably will cut it up some more with the chainsaw, but to use the saw safely I had to remove enough of the roots so I'm not tripping over them.  I used the CRKT "Half a Chance" to cut through some still living roots as wide as my wrist.  Most of these cuts were clean, all the way through, with a single swing of the blade.  That's how a properly sharpened machete is supposed to work, not chipping away at it like you would with a hatchet.  If you don't like machetes because you can't cut like that, then you need to sharpen your machete and work on your technique.

Thanks Poncho. The CRKT Half a Chance parang is an excellent cutter. One of the few machetes that came with a good edge from the factory.  I like the shape of the blade and the weight of it.  It is good for chopping thicker branches, and I find myself using it more than my other heavy chopper, a Tramontina Bolo.  I am reserving the Latin style machetes now for lighter duty such as squaring the face of a hedge or clearing trails. That is where they excel.  The Woodman's Pal I don't really consider a machete. It's more a replacement for a hatchet and is great for limbing and batoning.
