As the title says.  What do you guys carry different in your vehicle for winter time that you don't carry in the summer and if you don't drive in a car much then what do you carry on you different in the winter than in other seasons

Just curious more than anything and would like to know if there are some things that I don't carry that I need to :ahhh :like:

Work Van I carry my cold weather gear, cooler with water and snack food along with my meds in case of a delay due to road conditions.  Also, keep fuel tank above half.  Truck already has first aid kit, shovel and fire extinguisher.

Personal truck, blankets, first aid kit, shovel, 1 tube of sand, for around town errands.  For road trips add cooler with water, snacks, meds.

Is the sand for traction under a tire in snow or does it serve another purpose

Great suggestions so far :tu:

I deal with ice often and the sand helps in parking lots getting tire traction.

Ahhh, New  England winters. Snow, cold, sleet, freezing rain, ice, slush, alternating COLD and above freezing days to make things messy...

I drive an old full size '93 K1500 Blazer, so I have a lot of room...

Yup, keep fuel level above half always. I keep a spare winter coat and gloves. Extra pair of old work boots and socks. A blanket and a space blanket. An old D 3 cell MagLite as well as a Coleman lantern (battery power). Chains and a full sized snow shovel. Military style fold up Entrenching shovel. Mechanic Tools (because when ELSE will the universal joint decide to give up the ghost). A sleeping bag and cooler with water and snack in case I get stuck somewhere. Extra gallon of engine coolant is always with my truck anyway. Windshield fluid (that stuff is flammable which could be an added benefit. I don't like to carry sand, my truck is rusty enough, but I sometimes will carry old strips of carpet instead for same reason LOOP carries sand. If I can get some carpet under the wheels, I can get traction enough to get moving. Sometimes an old truck floor mat is better because of those grabby points on bottom surface. Rope. I keep first aid and jumper cables all year round.

And I will ride with a nice hot thermos of coffee, leatherman on belt, swiss army in pocket. And the Triple A card and cash. News radio on. CB on if for no other reason than hearing whatever the hell is skipping up on channel 6 to keep me alert on any long drives. I'm an hour from work on a clear day, so bad snowy days can easily double that. Hell, I keep half of the above stuff in the truck all year round anyway.

I actually pulled 7 or 8 cars out of the snow on my way to work one day. Part of why I like having a truck. I can actually help people in immediate need if I feel it is safe to do so.

Timely post, by he way Poncho,

This is the time of year to winterize. Change the windshield wipers. Maybe change coolant, check tires and brakes. Check battery and serpentine belt. I like to do the plugs wires and cap and do an oil change before the weather gets too bad, so I don't have to sit out in the cold and do it. I'm not all done yet, but I did get started.

Thanks for the reminder!

The reason for the timely manner is that my wife got another vehicle in the spring and we took all the stuff out of her previous vehicle and I am trying to see if I remembered to put everything back in that is needed  :D

Great list of things Thundah :like: I may need to add a couple things extra in there  :tu:

GG I would love a mild winter ot 2 like where you live but I don't think I could handle the heat of summer :ahhh :D

Pretty much the same as Thundah

With the addition of bottled water, Jetboil stove and dried food. Also now I've bought a new one, a winch remote and a full winching kit. A tyre inflation kit that runs off the on-board compressor. Most of this stuff is kept in a big plastic storage tub which doubles as a seat to keep your bum off the ground and a bit warmer and drier. Also some of those chemical heater packs

Spare set of warm clothes for my son and a sleeping bag for him (he's pretty much the only other person that comes in my car with me).

My vehicle's security starts and ends with a zip at present, all things considered I guess I should feel lucky our criminals steal the contents rather than (mostly) the whole car.

This limits what I keep in the car to what I don't mind loosing.
The exception is the kit below my seat, few $$ in there but I can't do without:

- 2x emergency triangles
- Mora 511 with ferro rod
- cheap folding saw
- jumper leads
- towing ropes
- penetrating spray
- spare fuses
- tyre pressure meter
- tyre repair kit

There are a few cheap space blankets stashed in the seat covers' pouches.

On the parcel shelve passenger side I keep the following:
- Big pepper spray (stream)
- Glass breaker/strap cutter combo
- NiteIze rope & carbiner tie down
- tin of Fisherman's Friend
- Towel & poncho.....because my car is not waterproof

Whenever I leave town there will be the following in the car:
- 12V pump, nice heavy duty one I was gifted
- 15L water
- Jerry can of petrol (depends)
- my full toolbox......not really a mechanic's toolbox but it mostly covers what I'm capable of doing myself....
- 2 spare tyres.  Only recently got the 2nd spare rim, will be a while before I can afford the tyre.

I learned the hard way that 2 spares is the only way to make sure the first flat doesn't mean the end of the holiday  :salute:

I know some will frown at the sand idea, so for those that really do not always need the added weight and afraid of the mess.
When dealing with ice, the slightest incline is difficult to move on, a inexpensive option other that a tub of kitty litter is newspaper.  It becomes very gritty on a wet surface and will provide traction to get you out of a inclined parking space or such.

A clean empty soup can and an emergency candle will keep the inside of a snow-covered car warm (ish).

That is in addition to the gear already mentioned above.

Heya, Smashie!

Yeah, I don't have a JetBoil, but I have a Primus classic that I got from Hilton's Tent City in Boston and a Peak1 from WallyWorld. One or the other is always in my big pack, which is in the back of my truck as well. And I second your suggestion of dried foods. That's my snack. I try to keep beef jerky ( both the dog and I can eat it), trail mix, and some dog food in the pack. I keep a frisbee too, so when we hike or camp, I can feed and water the dog, then play. Still useful.

No Winch yet, though. Wench, maybe, but no winch. I like those heater packs. I usually only have them for football games, but will take your heed and leave some in the sled.

A metal grain scoop, a bag of kitty litter, and I take the water out.

There is normally a square tipped spade, an etool, come along, saw, blankets and a small stove in there year round.

I usually don't keep water in the car in the winter- the best case scenario is that it will be frozen and useless, the worst case scenario is that, as it freezes, it ruptures the bottle, spills the remaining liquid all over my car and then freezes.

That having been said, I have been re-evaluating my car kit a lot lately.  I think a pair of coveralls is going to become a regular item, as they can provide a lot more insulation than you expect they would.  Also, minimum of two pairs of gloves- one pair of mechanic type gloves for anything that needs fixing (tire changes etc) and one pair of warm gloves for just general finger keeping in cold weather.  It will get to -40 in Ottawa quite easily and can stay there for a long time.

I live in the motor city, the only thing you really need here is a cell phone.  I always have extra clothes in the car for the winter, but in all honesty I have never really needed anything extra.
