NO winter to speak of here in SOCAL.  I do need to get some flares tho.

Flares. Right. I should probably get some flares or triangles like Gerhardt.

Water in the car isn't too bad an idea, as long as the bottle isn't full, then it won't rupture. Keep plastic between 3/4 and 80% full depending on estimated temps. Better still if you can rotate through with a metal canteen, it won't rupture and you can warm it on the Primus or JetBoil straightaway.

If not, Nalgene bottles will hold up very well even 80 or 90% full if they freeze.  Get the wide mouth ones. That way you can open it and chip the ice out with a fixed or locked blade or awl. No, the SAK parcel hook is no help with that. Pour the chips into whatever pot you use on the JetBoil.

Minus 40! Geez, Grant. That's cold enough to P!55 and lean on it!

This is what I carry for winter time.

1.Located in the passenger door storage compartment:
- two S.O.L emergency blankets
- one S.O.L Scout kit with Victorinox Dual Pro X added
2. Located on the driver door storage compartment:
- one S.O.L emergency bivvy
- one Adventure Medical Kits First Aid Family Medical Kit
3. Located in the back seat:
- one small fleecy throw
- one sportsman heat-a-seat
- one pair of mittens and a toque.
4. Located in the trunk area:
Inside a cooler are:
- large thick pic nic blanket
- wool  blanket
- car emergency kit that contains flares, emergency signs, tire inflation, tire spanner, etc.
- small tool kit
- folding emergency shovel
- Supplemental survival kit that contains various types of hand/feet warmers, emergency flashlight/hand powered radio, candles, matches, chocolate bars/candies, mini stove/heater with fuel, water purification straw plus tablets, and two stainless cups
5. Located in the center console:
- extra tough flashlight with spare set of batteries
- a few pairs of hand warmers

I do not carry water as that would be problematic during our cold winter temperatures. To offset this, I always pack a few water bottles on any trip on the highway. If not, I figure snow with the water purification equipment/emergency stove will do in an emergency pinch. I also pack a rubber boot tray in the back. This prevents the cooler from sliding all over the place, but also can act as a traction device if my 4x4 somehow gets stuck.
