Showcase: Mods to plier-based multitools
Reply #120 on: September 19, 2018, 01:11:32 PM
I don't know if mine would be considered "Custom" or "Modded" enough for this thread, but I will try with my contribution anyway, then go ahead and delete it if needs be. I do want to add that I will be updating this post as I progress with my "build".

Anyway...

Tool Name: I was going to name it "The regular Rebar that was bought because the knifeless version was more expensive and made knifeless with a few extra tweaks" but maybe just call it The Re'd-Rebar.
Basis: 2018 Leatherman Rebar Regular Stainless Steel model
Aim: To make it Knifeless, so that it would be legal to carry in a public place, but have as many tools as possible. Also to be able to widen the compatibility with other tools and usage applications.
Mods:

Tools kept:
- Large Flathead Screwdriver / Pry tool
- Medium Flathead Screwdriver
- Wood and Metal file
- Full-sized Phillips Screwdriver

Tools removed:
- Both knives removed, Plain and serrated blades
- Saw removed
- Awl removed (as it can be considered "article which has a blade or which is sharply pointed"),

Tools added:
- Small Bit driver (From a Wave)
- Large 2D Bit driver (From a Wave)
- Scissors (From a Charge)

Custom:
- Custom 2D-to-3D bit adaptor
- Sharpening of the cutters.

Footnote; It's still a work in progress and more mods will likely follow

Links: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,78435.0.html
Including:
- Build from start to finish
- How the Custom 2D-to-3D Bit adaptor was made
- Discussions about UK / Ireland compliance
- Sharpening of the cutters (Before and After results)

Pictures:

The custom 2D-to-3D bit adaptor:

The goal with this, was also to widen the compatibility with other tools and the overall usage / repairable applications.

Examples of usage and applications

Note: there has been no changes or alterations to the 2D bit adaptor, so it still functions with 2D bits.

Thanks hiraethus and BePrepared :hatsoff:

An update on my Rebar VX:

Tool Name: Leatherman Rebar VX
Basis: Leatherman Rebar
Aim: rendering it more versatile (inspired by the ST 300 VX above) and also pimping it up visually
Mods: removed the lanyard ring, a washer, the fixed Phillips and the small flat screwdriver as well as the original file, and inserted a pair of scissors and a small and a large bit driver from a LM Wave in the handles as well as a ground down and drilled Wave diamond file. Also gave it BO handles. Still some minor adjustments planned to the awl (thinning) and the wide flat screwdriver (pry bar notch).

Tool Name: Sidekick +
Basis: Sidekick
Aim: Make it more versatile
Mods: Removed the Phillips and Flat head drivers. Added wave bit holder (purchased only the bit holder; no wave was armed in the process... at least not by my hands).

The reason behind this mod was to make the mini tool box I carry in my backpack, a little lighter.

I forgot to take pictures of the before

At first try, just swapping the Phillips and Flat head with the Bit holder resulted in the pliers not fully closing.
It was necessary to bend the backspring a little bit, and also cutting a portion of the nail nick on the Bit holder. This created enough space for the plier head and fully close the tool.

With this mod completed, I was able to remove some bulk, by swapping some tools (in the tool box), and removing the unnecessary ones.

Below you'll see the tool box before and after pics.

Final mod for a while, documented it and will make a new thread soon. Added the Rebar Philips by removing the small metal tab inside the frame. There is not a little more of a gap between the frame pieces when it is closed but not really noticeable.

Tool Name: TSA Safe Squirt with a Blade
Basis: Leatherman Squirt PS4
Aim: Have a versatile pocket/key chain tool that I can get on an airplane without TSA taking it to sell on ebay. Specifically being able to have a blade that is easily removable/detachable
Mods:
Biggest mod was to replace the standard blade with a scalpel holder. Needed to file down the scales to accommodate this, however, it creates a nice notch that the outside of the blade holder can sit in.

I also added a pair of tweezer by filing down the opposite scale at an angle similar to the tweezer holders on the Style. I also filed the inside of this scale down maybe a 32th of an inch to make it lie flat with the wider scissors that are also stored here.

The back is going to have house keys on it (just need to get them cut), will replace my Style which was previously my EDC.

That mod is completely amazing! Where did you get the Scalpel holder? I'd love to get more info on how you did this...did the tool have screw pivots to begin with or did you add them?

Tool Name: Plusified pokey wave

Basis: new wave

Aim: kill my boredom, get the replaceable wire cutters and I have more user for an awl than the can opener to be honest.

Mods: wave plus pliers head and rebar awl.

Links: it isn't a very advanced mod so no links to the build.

It is quite the international tool. An American tool with an American company etching found in an Australian pawn shop with a Texan head and a Russian awl. Modded by a South American.

Hi,
Tool Name: Leatherman Style PS+
Basis: Leatherman Style PS
Aim: Rendering it more versatile
Mods: Removed nail file/screwdriver. Added blade and metal file.
I've lost screwdriver but i'm carrying a bits holder on my keychain. It's way better than Style screwdriver solution.
