Recommend a Flashlight for Pop Fuzzbucket Please?
on: November 13, 2017, 05:37:41 PM
The Old Man's wanting a flashlight (at least i hope it was flashlight he said?) from Santa and i haven't bought one for a few years now. Any recommendations?

He want's a small-ish one - i'm guessing AA or double AA - and he'd like a clicky switch rather than a twisty... jaffa cake in the post for best recommendation (that's cheep).

Cheers!

Led Lenser P3 AFS is what I'd get with those specs.
Also because it's one of the more readily available quality brands here.

Nice one - that looks ideal - nice price too.

I've got the regular P3 by the way and I think it's a great little light.
The focusing lens is a nice addition.
If I recall correctly, the AFS has a higher light output in the same, small package.

With my fairly limited flashlight experience here are some possibilities.

Thrunite T10 - I have one, love it.
Fenix LD12 - have other fenix models and rate them.
Olight S1A - probably my next flashlight.
Zebralight SC5w or SC53c - I have one of their headlamps, love it.
Eagletac D25A - these guys move quick, I've been hunting a NW for years.

Others I have seen recommended.

Solarforce Z2 - was compared to the T10.
Sunwayman - can't remember the model sorry.

Do note the Zebralight has a very... divisive UI. I personally love it, while 50ft-trad's slightly less enthusiastic opinion is a MT.o classic: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,71549.msg1490922.html#msg1490922

Thank you chaps!

I should have mentioned this in the op, but it has to be a fairly simple affair... anything too complicated and he'll start ranting!!!

All good stuff though - cheers!

It is a twisty but the Olight I3E EOS is a great small AAA light that is very dependable :dd:

Also if price isn't as big of a deal  I would also suggest the Olight Baton S1R as it is a marvelous light :like: It has a magnetic base and usb charger that just magnetizes to the bottom for charging :ahhh and it is a rather simple light to figure out even with a few different modes plus it is super bright :o

two that have been mentioned and have my approval,  because of their price range, simplicity (not lots of complicated modes and functions) and easy to find batteries, together with their sturdy construction.
Pics for size reference

LED Lenser P3

this one's been 4 years with me and it's my most carried of all time

and Lumintop AAA. I got one 2 years ago and have been so satisfied with it I bought 4 more for family and friends, all still working perfectly and making their owners light their path without failing. Weighs nothing, it's strong and very inexpensive

Thanks Blackybeard, the Klarus looks good. I had a Nitecore Defender a few years ago - i really liked the look and feel of it, but found it a bit temperamental... in that it wouldn't necessarily work when i needed it to!

I'm a big fan of Olight.
Personally, I would recommend the Olight S10R Baton III, but I'm sure the S1A is a great light too.
If you are willing to go a tad bit bigger, then the new M2R looks great and is as far as review goes awesome (the major complain is that it does not look tactical enough for a flashlight that is called warrior ::))

However, I recently found that I'm very fond of penlights, as they are so nice to carry in your cargo pants (anywhere, where you can carry pen, actually). My evaluation is not that far developed, so I cannot really give you a recommendation.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

@OP, what kind of torch do you have in mind? Pocket carry or stationary to grab and go?

I have a streamlight 1L-1AA I got a coupon and it was like 20$ with shipping little bit longer than a AA battery uses either 1 CR123 or 1 AA bright as all get out and has a click tailcap....

Thrunite T10 is a really nice simple light.  3 modes and memory so if he likes a certain output he's all set.  Tail click on which is also nice.  Nice pocket clip as well.  Very reasonably priced.

The penlight idea is a great one.  I have a Thrunite Ti4 2 AAA.  Its a nice light with tail click and several modes however the UI is simple.  Has a really bright mode 200 plus and really low Firefly .03.  If dad wears shirts with pockets it will make a fine carry in that pocket.  This is how I carry mine.  Well priced and nice run times.  There are other penlights with single modes and different colors to choose from.

Outside the box thinking.  What about a headlamp?  This is often over looked when thinking about lights.  I have the Olight HO5 which I really like.  Small enough for pocket carry and hands free when you need light.  NO teeth holding which many of us do from time to time.  2 AA or Li cells which is pretty sweet.  There is another HO5 with more features.  Pretty simple UI just press and cycle to the light output you desire.  There is a red led mode but you'll have to double press to get there.  Price is very reasonable.

Surefire E1L
Unfortunately I don't think they're still making this, I have the E1L which is my only EDC flashlight, it's the perfect light. I carry it in my pocket 24/7.
But they do make an E1B still I believe, which is virtually the same.
Tail switch works in momentary. The into downside for the E1B(opinion) is that is has 2 modes, 5 lumen and 200 lumen, I'd rather it be a single mode. Takes one CR123a battery.

Oh yeah, I forgot about this... geeeesss Pabs!

In the end I got him a Ledlenser L7. Not the most exciting flashlight I know, but it fitted the brief and was pretty much what he wanted. It's a good size for him and easy to operate... it's got a good beam on it too. He seems happy with it.

Does this mean I have to fork out jaffa cakes now?
