I have the same problem at the moment. The advice I was given was to get 3/32 inch rods and sand them down. They are a bit closer than 2.5 mm ones.

I have done the same. Sanding down 2.5mm is possible too, just takes longer(and more patience. )Worst of all was sanding 1/8 down to 2.5mm, I still get upset when I remember it. DO NOT TRY Nowadays, I sand 3/32 down until it fits the 2.2mm holes, and use 2.5mm for the 2.5mm holes, which is bliss.
