Looking for advice: 0.081 brass rod
on: November 16, 2017, 10:06:57 PM
Hey all. Haven't been around for a while. Hope you're doing well.

I'm finally ready to try my first SAK mod. Haven't been able to get ahold of any 2.25mm brass rod, so I'm wondering if I should go with the 0.081 inch variety (2.2mm is 0.086 inches) and use it for the centre pins.

Have others used this diameter with success, or would I be better off using the 2.5mm and sanding it down?

Thanks in advance!

Haven’t tried using 2mm pins on any of my 91mm and 84mm builds... it might not withstand the tension from the backspring and tools...

I normally sand down 2.5mm pins

I have the same problem at the moment. The advice I was given was to get 3/32 inch rods and sand them down. They are a bit closer than 2.5 mm ones.

I have done the same. :tu:
Sanding down 2.5mm is possible too, just takes longer(and more patience.  :wait:)

Worst of all was sanding 1/8 down to 2.5mm, I still get upset when I remember it.  DO NOT TRY  :ahhh

Nowadays, I sand 3/32 down until it fits the 2.2mm holes, and use 2.5mm for the 2.5mm holes, which is bliss. :dd:

Okay, many thanks! I've ordered some 3/32 to sand down.

My technique is to put a piece of rod in a drill, and spinning moderately fast while filing. With some sandpaper to smooth the surface afterwards(while still spinning).

Experiment, and find out what works for you.  :salute:
