Rebar style mod
on: November 20, 2017, 03:25:26 AM
Hi all

A little while ago i started a thread asking about doing a purely style based mod on my 2x leatherman rebar's. What i wanted to do was swap parts from a stainless steel rebar with the parts of a black oxide one for two rather cools looking unique tools. This was partly inspired by the 30th anniversary supertool 300 and micra they bough out. As always this great community pointed me in the right direction and i was able to purchase some tools to disassemble them both from one of our great member loki-mobile.  The tools arrived Friday but i was going away for the weekend so as soon as i returned Sunday night i got cracking.

First task was the plier heads. People had mentioned that i needed to be patient when getting the holes lined up to get the pivots back in and boy where they right. I have tender thumbs still.

I wasn't sure at first if i was going to swap over the pivots/bolts but after trying both i decided it looked pretty decent. I also swapped the replaceable cutters over just to add to the style. With the plier heads done it was time to move onto the tools.

This proved to be a bit harder at first but i soon got the hang of it. Again at first i wasn't sure if i wanted to swap the locking mechanism over but after trying both i decided why not. Im really happy with how they worked out in the end. Both could do some tweaks with the tightness of the tools but im going to do that tomorrow because it getting a little late.

Here is the finished products:

I personally love how they turned out. The rebar has been a solid favourite for a long time and now they are even more special and unique to me.

So what do you guys think?  Oh and does this warrant a hacked merit badge? i mean i did hack them but nothing is different on the tools.

Thanks again for all the advice and thanks again to loki for providing the tools.

Looks like you did a nice job with even swapping the locks out.

Thanks. I liked how it looked on the 30th anniversary supertool 300 so decided to give it a go. Its surprisingly easy to do.

They are. I was going to attempt to use vice grips. Im so glad i didn't. That would have ended with some really knackered bolts.

When I first saw the 30th anniversary Micra/ST300 combo, I was in live for the two-tone pattern. Looks so cool ! I had to make one too, but with a Rebar !

Well... I have to admit I discovered by myself (before reading this topic or Poncho's...) that, yes, replacing the pivots in plier heads is a REAL PAIN IN THE SMURF

Anyway, when I completed these, the more sore the thumbs were, the happier I was !  :tu:

This one has both cosmetic & functionnal mods : on top of the two-tone mod, I replaced the awl by Wave scissors and the Phillips screwdriver by a Wave large bit driver.
The Charge Ti nylon sheath also nicely reflects the two-tones and is able to carry a Leatherman large bit caddy.
I really love this one

Nothing special about this one. I prefer his brother !

I hope whoever buys them appreciates how awesome two-tone is. :like: :multi:

I recently modded a pair of contrasted parts MP600s. It really takes the tools to a new aesthetic level. :)

I found one new with leather sheath for $29 at one point on eBay, but that has been a while ago. Sometimes see them for less than $40 in good shape too. :)
