Zachary Fowler's Survival Hacks to Swisstool Spirit
on: November 21, 2017, 05:54:46 AM
First, let me say sorry if this has been posted before. I did a quick search and didn't find a mention of it.

I was watching a video by the winner of 'Alone', season 3, a show where folks have to survive in the wild by themselves. The person who lasts the longest wins. This guy, Zachary Fowler, managed 87 days. That is to say, he was the last person remaining after 87 days. No knowing how much longer he could have gone.

One of the pieces of gear he took was a Swisstool Spirit, with some modifications.

At 3:14 of the video, he discusses mods to the tool.

Also, sorry if I screw up the youtube link. Either I'm blind or the option to insert video is gone.

He shows some seriously wicked skill with that spoon gouge. I watched a video where he whipped out a spoon in about 5-10 minutes. I don't know if I've ever once successfully carved a spoon.

EDIT: Also, apparently, he pretty well 'used up' the file on the Spirit while out in the wild, using it to keep his other tools sharp. Wow. That's some serious hard use there.

Here's where he discusses that...

Way to go... I understand his mods to the spirit... except one thing... All Spirit models have the awl... It’s the one that has a hook at the bottom... Could he not just drilled a hole on it if he needed a sewing eye?

This is what I was thinking too, but maybe for woods duty both an sewing awl and a reaming awl makes more sense? Also what Lynn said about the file, that is really severe duty for the Spirit file, I wonder if Vic would warranty repair it with all the other mods that were done on it.  ???

The file on my Spirit is worn also, but only slighty, I try not to overuse it on hardened steel to keep from ruining it. I keep a Nicholson Handy File around for heavy sharpening, much easier to replace at $10 vs. a $100 Spirit. The Spirit file is great for filing a burr here and there or a light touch up, and great for softer materials, but I wouldn't attempt to sharpen the whole face of an axe or hatchet with it, or a whole saw. Maybe he was limited as to how many tools he could have?

And the spoon gouge is not something I would need, but it is a very cool mod for carving and whittling. They probably disallow tinned food on those survival challenges anyway, I wouldn't make it.  :D

I see also that he's using a Spirit X. I think I agree with the plain edge with a point over the serrated or combo edge for versatility.  :tu:

And also out of all the possible MT choices, the Spirit?   :2tu:

Right J Man, he could probably buy a dozen Spirits, mod them all to his specs, and sell the excess for double.  :ahhh

This is exactly the case. They each get 10 'items'. For example, if you take a bow, you also get X arrows (6 I think) as a single item.

Here's what he took.
EDIT to add: notice he drilled a hole in the far end of his ferro rod. He mentioned in another video that he did that so he could snap the rod in half and have two, in the event one was lost. As it turns out, he only ever had to start fire a few times. He kept one fire going for 50 days straight.

What about video equipment, and keeping it charged, a solar charger?

No, they're very clear. They get cameras and battery packs for them, as well as a 'bail-out' GPS distress signal beacon. You want out, hit the button, and a team comes and gets you, but all that stuff is for making the show, not keeping you alive. Well, except for the Beacon, which is an 'I quit' button, essentially.

Wish I had a reset button a time or 2, but life is not a video game.

Or a reality show apparently.

Then again, not having a way out could be dreadful.  :surrender:
