30D Traditional challenge
on: November 22, 2017, 12:31:35 AM
The holidays are a time for tradition. So what better way to celebrate them than with the traditional folder challenge.
So to kick this off I'll be starting with a Rough Rider camper. This knife has all your traditional features of a camping knife from the 40s and 50s; main blade, can opener(british type), bottle opener/screwdriver and an Awl. The traditional look is completed with a lanyard bail, polished bolsters and jigged bone.

I will probably be switching this one out for some of my other traditionals during the course of this challenge. And as always I will be trying to pick up secondary badges along the way.

Day2
Another Rough Rider, this time it's the pliers. This model is a non-standard electricians knife sporting short strip&screwdriver blade and a small pair of pliers w/ wire cutter notch.

Question  Is it a nail breaker :D I had one similar to that out at a store looking at it and it was either that one or the Electrician knife that was very hard to open :ahhh

Sweet pic though :tu: :like:

It is tight but the camper is the nail breaker. The notch doesn't have a crisp cut eather, its tapered and polished so your nail slips.
I will do a close up with tomorrow's pics

Day3
As promised here's a study in opening and closing. I imagine the best way to measure these knives would be to clamp both knife and blade then pull open using a spring scale. Since I don't have that kind of a setup available at the moment I will be simply pushing the knife shut from 90 degrees on a kitchen scale. This should produce similar results as the back spring applies equal force in either opening or closing. For consistency I will be aiming for the center dot on the scale, holding the blade roughly at where a nail Notch would be (some of them don't have it) and the reading is the highest that I catch by eye. This should be the hump point of the knife where it's most likely to either slip or snap your thumbnail.

Rough Rider pliers 460g
Queen Cutlery Big Chief 930g
Rough Rider camper 1024g
SOG mini Auto clip 144
 IK co 1040g
unknown Pakistan 370g
Victorinox Trekker 280g

I've also included a close up of the nail notch on the screwdrivers of both the RoughRider camper and the Victorinox Trekker. As you can see the Trekker notch is cut a little bit deeper and at a sharp 90-degree on the inside edge. The RoughRider is a little shallower and you see the vertical scallops. The RR's top edge instead of being 90° like the Victorinox is polished slightly round making it harder to grip. If you press your thumb across both nail notches the fleshy part of your thumb will actually catch on the Victorinox but not on the Rough Rider indicating that high polish and the slickness inside the nail nick.

Edit:
Correction I just caliper the thickness of the nail nick on the Roughrider camper screwdriver and the Vic and they're both read the same. So I guess it's just the polish that makes the Rough Riders slicker

I would say yes. I have never broken a nail on it, but it is not a pleasent opener. You are more likley to slip and have it snap shut on you. The blade is actualy the easiest tool to open on the RR Camper if you can believe it. That awl is a nightmare.

It kind of reminds me of my first knife in that respect. I don't even remember where I got it, but somehow I ended up with this knife I could barely open when I was about 6 or 7. I had it for all of a day before my old man caught me with it and took it away.
Then he gave me an Imperial Camper HOBO. That knife was a better fit and I carried it every day and for Scouts till it was stolen at Custaloga Town when I was 12. I actually just "replaced" it ( nostalgia trip) last year with an Imperial Camper Matterhorn that I found at a local pawn shop.

Day 4
Can opener time
The RR Camper uses a blade style opener that many sellers mistake as a small blade with them stuff when listing it. Though this type is common  on older knives  and as an independent kitchen utensil; the only reference I've ever seen to this type that gives it a name calls it a "British tin opener"
Now this type of opener can really cut all the way around; usually you only end up cutting halfway Around the can and then pouring the contents. Also you can't punch it too close to the rim or else you'll punch through the side of the can.

I will try to add that can opener chart as soon as I find it I'm not sure where I put the pic

Day 5
This zip tie project is something I did at work about a year ago. (Pics however are new) The top shelf is 2 pieces of scrap shelving that I cinched togeather with zip ties, then lashed with 300# bank line. This has been done and 6 locations where the two small racks overlap. The boss was suposed to bolt them together and never did. It has held up suprisingly well. Average load on this is around 180#

Day 6
Big Chief
Today we're taking a look at the QueenSteel #45 "BigChief". This is a large 4in blade single jack knife with a unique solid cast aluminum handle patented in the 1955(?). Because of this solid cast handle, the tail of the backspring passes through a cutout to catch onto the back of the handle allowing the pivot pin to be the only pin. This means the knife has a total of 4 pieces; handle, blade, backspring, pivot pin.
From what I understand these were produced at QueenCutlery of Titusville PA in the '60s & '70s. Queen is still in buisness producing small run, high quality traditionals.
This is one of the 2 Queens in my collection; the other bieng a fixed blade hunting knife (#82 I think). I heard they stopped making fixed blades in the early 90s, but never verified; so I could be wrong.

Given how the Forum was down lets keep this rolling

Day7 kinda
It's a flashlight roundup.
In the middle you see pictured the RoughRider Pliers Electrician and around it you have three flashlights that I use on a daily basis.
On the one side we have the Streamlight protac 2L. This is a Gen2 280 Lumen (G1 was 180 &G3 is 360?) with two 123a lithium battery. This is my EDC light and is always on me.

Next we have Ozark Trail 500 Lumen handheld spotlight powered by 3 C cells. This is my vehicle light; I use it for finding entryways in the dark and highlighting house, building and other road markings that are not always visible when I'm at work.

Lastly we have the Maglite LED 3D cell. This particular flashlight functions both as light and also it's what I tend to grab when I'm potentially not in a safe location and cant carry.

Sorry about the weird photo sizing. My camera automatically reset to its highest setting and I am using a new app to resize

Thats it. I'm done with this RRCamper knife.:poh: Think thousand plus grams of force to open the main blade was nail breaker??? Well I just tried to do a nice photoshoot with the screwdriver & awl and managed to bust off both thumbnails. The secondary tools feel twice as tight as the main blade (which is tolerable once you're used to it). So now are you get is a rant.

Say goodbye to it because I'll be using something else for the rest of the challenge and this will be going back in the knife trunk

Day 9
Ok. So I was cranky yesterday and took it out on my knife...whith good reason though

So today how about a roundup of what traditionals are left
Queen Big Chief
Case Sodbuster Jr (black handle, engraved)
Opnel no8
IK Co. (Steel & Green enamel)
RR Pliers
Milano (Philippine copy of a clasic Italian stiletto switchblade)
WASA souvenir knife ( Swedish made pen knife with three blades in an unequal lobster pattern)
4 unbranded Dime Store knives from the late 80s; Chinese made 2 wood handle, 1 blue pearlescent, 1 green plastic with metal flake

I know it won't be carrying the Chief, the Milano or the two plastic handle Dime stores. And we get enough Opnels around here there's no real point in doing that one.
I'm actually leaning towards the Sodbuster, I think.

Day 11
I need to appologize. This is my worst thread ever. It seems to be going down in flames.
But I think I have figured out why I am having so much trouble with this one. Traditionals really aren't my thing, and I am having trouble giving up my sak to use one. So I found a solution; put all knives not in my imeadiate edc away.

So here we go, lets try to revive this.
Heres what I kept out;  the pliers electrician knife, my Leatherman and my cold steel recon one. Everything else is locked up for the rest of this challenge. The only sak left is the MiniChamp on my necklass and I generaly dont use that unless I have to. Hopefully this will force me to use the traditional more.

And to top it all off let's toast this new beginning with a fresh case of Coca-Cola
