A thought on the OHT.
on: November 02, 2008, 04:01:01 AM
The One Handed Trekker is hugely popular, I even saw a new version paired with a Classic at a local yokel department store...the kind of place you can buy air filters and snow tires, to toys, to toothpaste and wallpaper.  I've never seen any "new" knife of multi sold there...but somehow the OHT got in there.

The OHT pops up in a lot of posts in every "What is your EDC?" thread.  It's been the basis for a bunch of scale mods and blade reprofilations (word? ).

The blade is sturdy, sharp, and easy to use...and despite having so many useful tools, it's really light, fits in your hand well, and has a nice tactile surface.

But the one thing I would change would be the saw.  For urban EDC, a saw that big on such a "small" tool doesn't jive.  Outdoors it's extremely handy...but what would you put in place of the saw if you were to make it a part of your EDC?  Something that woulden't change the size/heft of the tool so much though...I thought about having a slightly larger pair of the Vic pliers in there, but it would widen the tool too much IMO.

A pair of scissors in place of the saw would have me carrying the OHT a lot more day to day.  Are there any modifications out there that did just that?

Aye,

I've previously pondered that it would be good to have more OH 111mm with options other than the Saw (ie, file, scissors)

Looking at the 111mm range, it seems you have to go up to four layers to get in a second end-tool, which is a bit :(

Anyway, I'd definitely consider a Scissors model, or OH Helmsman, or, as griped, a two-layer with the OH blade. (Centurion or  :-[ Nomad :P )

I have the OHT (serrated newer model) it sees use mostly on camping/hiking trips and around the house. Today there are a few options with on hand locking blade. OHT non serated, OH Sentinel both serrated and plain, OH Parachutist (replaces wood saw with a seat belt cutter), OH Fireman (keeps the wood saw + seat belt cutter replaces philips with a cork screw), I believe there's a Sentinel plus model with just a blade + philips on the back.

Lose...the saw :o, burn the heretic >:( :D

I'm a bushcrafter, so I never want to be without a saw. But I can see the OHT being less than perfect in an urban setting, so I'd recommend the file found on the other 111mm too :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

IMHO the ranger and the trekker series is not recommended for urban use unless you are in the  law enforcement or rescue field. The blade is just too big might scare off the sheepys. If you want to carry a one handed blade opening multitool I think the best multitool for the job is the wave or the charge get most things done and is relatively sheepy friendly.

I suppose if I were crazy ( :D) and wanted to replace the saw with another tool, it would the be scissors/phillips combination.  I only have OHTs with the corkscrew on the back though, so I think that would make good sense.

That saw is way too good to replace though...

I use the scissors on my classic. They are small but can do most of the tasks when called for. So far I haven't missed the bigger 91mm scissors, and replaced my climber with a mechanic for edc.

It sure is nice, but I'd like something more pocket sized.

Back to the Vic. I was thinking about this lately, and my ultimate conclusion was  to take the GAK, made the OH blade plain edge, and swap the saw out for the seatbelt blade.
Fan of the Leatherman mini-bit driver and the Vic backspring philips.

The O/H Parachutist is as close as you can get to that.   You'd have to grind off the serrations though.
