New Rebar Fan
on: November 25, 2017, 12:34:45 AM
Maybe I’m an idiot.

I once had a PST…back in ’88? ’89?

I liked it and then I gave it away when I got a SOG mutlitool. And then decided to ‘upgrade’ to a Wave.

Of course, when I stumbled upon the Charge AL, I jumped on that. It was like an improved Wave.

The problem was that given it’s size and weight, I found that I didn’t carry it that often. It was chunky. But it was really capable and had a 154cm knife blade. Never you mind that I always had a knife with me, in addition to a multitool. I liked the idea of a 154cm clip blade.

Which would be nice if I actually carried it.

So then I became enamored of the Juice. First a big Juice with a corkscrew—a lovely gift from a dear friend—and then a smaller Juice S2. Sort of the Swiss Army Knife of Multitools: small, compact, lots of features. And it was easy to carry or pack along. And it came in handy. And I like orange scales.

Then, one day on a hike, I found the Juice wasn’t tough enough to cut old, rusty, barbed wire. The handles bent, the wire cutters dulled, and the barbed wire stayed intact.

You call this a multitool?

So, in a way, I kind of gave up on multitools. Sure, I packed a Charge along with me on motorcycle and car camping trips. And a Juice came along on fishing and backpacking trips. But I stopped carrying a multitool for EDC or even simple hikes.

Then I saw the Rebar. The Rebar seems a lot like the old PST. Simple, small, easy to carry. So I ordered one a few days ago and it showed up today. Why didn’t you guys mention this tool before?

I love it.

Yes, it’s new for me, and I haven’t really tested it hard yet, but it “ticks the boxes” for me. It’s relatively small and compact. It’s relatively light. It has nice pliers and a good tool kit. I even like the 420HC blade. Hey, it locks.

And it looks like the tools would be easy to replace if needed.

Wow. Finally a multitool I’ll actually carry and use. Anybody need a slightly used Wave?

“Why didn’t you guys mention this tool before?”

You are joking I hope!  There is a Rebar club, there are more than a few threads, even a 30 day challenge last year.

Now, I actually found a Super Tool 300 first, loved it but wanted some thing easier to carry, and told the Rebar would be what I want.

Here is picture of my Rebars - and ST300;)

And, I also use my Wave (on Wave Wednesday)!

Today the BO Rebar had pocket duty.

Hey, good point!

OK, I'm going to do a 30-day Rebar Challenge. I'll start a new thread.

And, by the way, I hold no grudge for you guys keeping this thing a secret.

Rebar? Heck of an MT. Carried one for a long time. Recently won a GAW from Breezy for a BO Rebar with Wave pliers, bit changers, and scissors put in. Perfect tool for everything! I have been EDCing it since I got it.
The rebar is the best inside tool mid size LM MT. IMHO. The Blast had a better tool selection,  but was heavier and bulkier.

Congrats on the Rebar Nix!

Glad you've come "full circle" in a way.  The Rebar has quite a following.  You've already heard from some of its proud owners.  Your challenge will be a nice way to acquaint yourself with it.  Have fun and for the time being I'd hang on to that Wave

the Rebar was my last Leatherman, and since I got it it's been the most carried too! A true eye-opener compared to what I expected from newer LMs....

I just read this and am amazed by how similar we think! As I posted in your Challenge thread, I just got rid of my TTi when a close friend I showed it to offered to buy it from me, even though my name was engraved on it. It was an opportunity for me to recover the cost and give it up as I have a Rebar on the way.

I just found the TTi too heavy and cumbersome, although the pride in ownership of the tool is very high. I considered buying a Mini Tool also, but I think its not tough enough like a Rebar is.

I can't wait for my Rebar to arrive (its somewhere in the middle of the ocean between US and Philippines, I think) and start carrying it. In the meantime, I might get back to carrying my Wingman temporarily.

I'm also enamored with the Vic SwissTool Spirit and someday I'll own one. Got a chance to hold one for the first time last week in a Vic store and wow :)

Nix seems to be on an extremely generous "downsizing" process as of late.
And I mean generous in the big,  :hatsoff:-ish way.

More details to come in the near future to Mt.Org...
