Nix's 30-day Rebar diet
on: November 25, 2017, 05:35:59 AM
First, you need to understand that I'm a SAK guy. I'm most comfortable with a Pioneer or a Climber in my pocket. Maybe a small fixed-blade on my hip. So, this challenge may be a bit more uncomfortable for me than you'd expect.

I've been through a few multitools and never found one that I really connected with. Until now....maybe. My new Rebar reminds me of my very first Leatherman PST; for some reason, that makes me like it instantly. So, for the next 30-days, I'm making my Rebar my EDC and primary multitool as a sort of "getting to know you" event.

Already I'm a bit nervous at the thought of not carrying a small SAK with some scissors and a pair of tweezers. I really like scissors, and, if the Rebar has one obvious deficit, it's a lack of scissors. I'd gladly trade the sheepsfoot serrated blade for a nice pair of Victorinox scissors.

And what's up with this "awl"? It seems a bit obtuse to use as an actual awl or to really sew with. I may have to test that a bit. But enough of complaining about the new tool I'm thrilled to have. Let's call this....

Day 0:

Can't wait for this challenge :like: I carried a Rebar and an Executive together as my main work EDC for more 3 or more years and never needed more than that :salute: I change up my EDC daily now but it is more for fun than anything :D

I've been kicking the idea of this challenge around for quite awhile, but I've still got about 10 more days with the Center Drive.  Good luck buddy and you'll have fun!!

I'm seriously following this! I just sold my Charge TTi as I found it cumbersome to carry. And now I'm waiting for my Rebar to arrive anytime soon.

The reason why I'm drawn to this model is it seems to remain true to the original PST design.

I'm sure I'll enjoy and learn from this Challenge, Nix!

Day 01:

Oh, we're off to a good start with this challenge, the Rebar & I.

Used the pliers to help pull the battery from my wife's car. She doesn't drive it much in the Winter. As a result, her battery died last Winter.   So this year the battery goes on a charger and the car will need to be reawakened come Spring.

Day 02:

I needed to clean out a "U" trap under the sink today. The sink wasn't draining as well as it should and I figured a good cleaning out would help.

I used the Rebar to help fashion a disposable 'brush' from a shop towel and some tie-wire. Wire cutters easily cut the soft steel wire. I used the pliers head to twist the wire around the shop towel to form the 'brush' and keep the towel from getting stuck in the drain.

The Rebar was a bit stiff when I first got it, but I think it's starting to break in and smooth out.

Oh, sink is working better now!

Great start.  The Rebar does seem to arrive very tight and requires so effort to break it in.
When I used my Stainless Rebar for the 30 day, it was like a old friend after day 12 and road well in a box sheath behind the cell phone on right hip.

Great idea with the tie wire Nix :like: I have a slow draining bathroom sink that I may try this on  A 9 year old's bathroom, so it is probably something stuck in there ::) :D

Aren't you bothered that the Rebar has no scissors, Nix?

Oh, dear. A difficult question.

Yes and no.

Yes, it bugs me because this is my only carry tool for this challenge. I have forsaken all my usually EDC tools like Executives, Classics, Climbers, and even fixed blades.  So I have no scissors with me!  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

No, because in a normal situation, i.e. not in the middle of a challenge, I'd have a Classic or a PX with me. And the lack of scissors would not be an issue.

To me a pliers-based multitool should be focused on the pliers, and wire cutters. I liek having good drivers, too. I'll be reaching for a pocket knife first, and odds are pretty good I'll have me cap lifter, blade, and scissors in that package.

Where my 'system' might breakdown is on hikes. I like carrying a Hiker, Camper, or Soldier on hikes. None of those give me scissors, and my Rebar wouldn't either. So....I guess I'll adjust my hiking & camping carry accordingly. Did I mention the PX is my favorite SAK?

Day 03:

Long and boring day at work. Rebar snuck into a spork shot after becoming bored sitting in the briefcase:

Oh, my. How does one do that...?

I'd take out the sheepsfoot blade if I could install scissors.....

I believe Poncho has a thread on that in the "Mod squad" subforum. Pretty thorough an accessible procedure   :salute:
