Pocket carry fixed blades
on: November 28, 2017, 03:03:45 PM
Lets see the fixed blades you pocket carry and how you carry them!

I am interested in this topic, although I am not carrying one today.

I like the Mora Eldris for a short hike, but simply use the factory sheath.

I've pocket carried the CRKT Minimalist(s), full sheath and handle in pocket, concealed
and the Aqua Salt, Jumpmaster and CS Desperado with the sheath (blade) inside pocket and the handle sticking all out for good, better purchase

that was in front pockets and at work. On the rear right pocket I've carried a Mora or CS Roach Belly, sheathed to the belt through the loop but with the sheath part that covers the blade snug inside the pocket, only handle sticking out. Comfortable and not noticeable

I don't have any pictures at the moment, but my Izula, BK14, and BK11 have all spent considerable time in my pocket. Usually they're paired with the stock sheath, dummy corded to my belt loop so I can drop the sheath while using the knife instead of worrying about it.

@ an0nemus, great pocket sheath.   Here in California we cannot carry our fixed blade in pocket.  We have to have them fully exposed in a sheath.  I would like to pocket carry my smaller fixed blades.

Excellent leather work, but I'm willing to bet it would not be comfortable sitting down with that in my pocket.

This is a concept I very much like, but I can't think of any way it would be comfortable or practical.

TBH, my main motivation is my knife making mentor/teacher giving me crap about not carrying one of my own knives

I forgot to say that I carried these cheapo, $5 fixed blades for years before getting to know better quality brands and models.
They did just fine and I've gone through 5 of them to date (1 is lost, the other one missing is in the next pic, so re-droung and resharpened that it's almost unrecognisable)

the sheaths come with a very bad clip, which I usually take off, and the retention is poor so I heat them up and press and bend the plastic until it holds the blade secure.

they are ideal in length to carry sheathed inside the pocket of most of my pants, jeans and jackets.
The sheaths have nice holes to put cord through or arrange other attachment methods via screws or zip ties

actually here in the Philippines we're not allowed to carry any sharp or bladed objects deemed as weapons so there's always a risk of confiscation  :(

I absolutely agree! (Although I have a friend who carries his fixed blade inside his side cargo pocket). This is why I was almost tempted to buy a Mora Eldris (like the green one posted here) and make it as my fixed blade carry inside front pocket occasionally. But enforcement of knife laws seem to be getting strict here nowadays so carrying a folder is more discrete....

I've gotten looks while eating my apple in the morning, and the only reason I can think of considering the move was from a Byrd Meadowlark 2 to the Spyderco Salt 1, are the shiny serrations on the Salt

Perhaps a small fixed blade would be more acceptable if it's assumed to come from the cutlery drawer in the kitchen......?

The only vaguely comparable knife I own is the Condor Mini Bushlore, the chunky sheath rules it out, but even with a kydex sheath it would be quite a thing in my pocket.....

Nix's Essential arrived today - Thanks Nix, it's amazing! Beautiful f&f, sheath is really sweet. I can see a lot of use in this little knifes future.

I will write more when I've had a chance to put it to some use. Until then, some pics.

Still assessing the BR Essential kindly sent me by Nix  :salute:

It's a beautiful knife, no doubt about it, and the sheath is a thing to behold as well. I may profile the micarta at the lanyard end of the scales to fit my hand a little better as the angle it's at presently will cause hot spots and discomfort with prolonged use. Aside from that it's a perfect little blade. I've used it for chopping potatos and carrots, trimming paracord and leather thong, and will be putting it to some harder use next time I'm out in the green.

I can't thank Nix enough for his generosity, but I will try. THANKS NIX!

Here it is with SI Farmer and MP400 - a great combo in anyones books.

Most welcome!

Glad to hear you're putting it to a bit of use. That's got a convex edge and sharpening takes a slightly different approach. It can be done freehand, but I've found the sandpaper on a soft surface method to be very reliable. That M-4 should hold an edge for a long time.  :tu:
