Anyone like the strobe on their lights?
on: January 05, 2017, 08:23:11 PM
It's a hidden mode on most if not all lights so what gives for those that HATE them?  I like the hidden strobe mode and wish my Thrunite T10 had one.  I find it a feature I'd want IF my vehicle would become disabled.  I can add a diffuser and warn vehicles.  I've actually used the feature when walking down a very dark road with a narrow shoulder.  I used the mode pointed downward with a diffuser ( lip balm cap ) as I walked.

It would seem that mode would be good for a hike light or in case of natural disaster.  Wouldn't a strobe act much like a beacon, i.e. easier to see it?

Can't say that I like or dislike it. I've never had to use it and it's hidden with three clicks on my light. I guess if there ever came a time that I needed it, I'd be happy to have it. Otherwise, I don't really think about it.

The light I carry when walking in the early morning or late night has instant strobe access through a dedicated button. The likelihood of having to use it to distract or blind someone is slim to none (thankfully) but it still makes me feel better. Although, I have used it on loose dogs and aggressive geese before. Seemed to throw them off, but maybe it was just my imagination. You never can tell with animals.
May it be as the Pattern has chosen.

No, can't stand them, if I end up seeing them for too long I'll have a brain reboot.

They are really only good for annoying my wife. And that never ends well for me. I once had a car accident at around midnight in a desolate stretch of road (went off the road and rolled a few times) and I had a reverse-clicky Fenix light with me that I was able to flash on and off easily to alert the emergency crews. I don't think the strobe mode is any more helpful than just having a regular flashlight in an emergency situation.

... Disco mode...  I do not mind it.
Many of my lights have an SOS signaling mode, in addition to strobe.
I see it as the pin hole in victorinox scales. It does not take up any more space and it may come usefull.

The hidden strobes are usually better/less intrusive, but you may forget how to access them in an emergency.

My EDC lights all have strobe, but are hidden, so I don't mind that.

I don't have any use for strobe other than possibly emergency signalling. Given that the mode is hidden, but still easy to access, I'd rather have than not have.

I like them. Mainly because they are fun. Bust out some techno and and kick the light on. Instant rave. LOL!

I've never had a need for the disco lights, but providing they're unobtrusive modes (I don't stumble upon them by accident) I don't mind them being there.

I've never bothered with them in the past but I do like the idea of using them as a warning beacon with a diffuser. Diffuser is now in the car  :salute:

Most if not ALL "disco" modes are hidden.  I have lip balm caps as diffusers which IMO adds a level of function to said modes.  Burts bees for example is orangish/yellow cap and add a neat color rendering to the disco mode.

I've used strobe mode walking my kids around on Halloween. Really fun. On occasion, I put two flashlights with different strobe rates together for some super-funky syncopation!

I still very much like the strobe feature.  My newest light Manker E02 has them relatively hidden.  Since its an angle light I haven't yet found a diffuser for it.

I love the strobe on my Zebralight.

I guess it's useful but I wouldn't want to have it unless it was reasonably hidden. My go-to Olight S2A has got it just right imho; requiring three consecutive presses to activate the strobe.

I've never intentionally used it, but I concede that your idea of using it when walking near traffic, which I hadn't thought of, makes a great deal of sense.

I like the hidden strobe

As do I.  But I prefer that the strobe be easily accessible and not hidden.  I have used a strobe for everything from warning vehicles of my pedestrian presence, to signalling an ambulance at 2:00 a.m., to repelling an aggressive Chihuahua.  Strobes are awesome.

Its the stupid SOS function that needs to disappear.   :salute:

No , in fact I now go out of my way to only buy flashlights without it if possible.
Ditto for Moonlight mode as well, and no head twist feature. Although I did capitulate eventually on that ( twisty head) with my keyring light I just got.

I wouldn't have my keychain light if it didn't have moonlight mode.
It's the most useful in practice for me.

No strobe for me.
Low-mid-high is more then enough in my opinion.
Who needs strobe in dangerous situations when you've got 1000lm?

I don't like strobe. That's one of those BS tacticool moronic gimmicks that someone ought to have their teeth knocked down their throats for making mainstream. You know, like partially serrated blades.

BLINKING is fine. BLINKING is USEFUL. Strobe is stupid. Not that I have an opinion on the matter or anything...

I have two low-cost flashlights, a AA 'Ultrafire' or some such and a 2xAA just marked 'Tactical'. Both have 3 modes: High, Low, Strobe. They go in order, and if you turn it off in one mode, you get the NEXT mode when you turn it on. No avoiding seizure-inducing idiocy. These are $4 lights that would otherwise be insanely awesome, knocked down to 'grumble-grumble, yeah, okay. It was only $4'.

I have strobe on my EDC light (Preon 01). But it also has blink, and both of those modes are buried and don't get in the way, at least. I'm testing the Thrunite Ti3, and same thing. Strobe is there but buried.

So, what you're saying is..........

 :D

I like strobe when its hidden.  If I have to cycle thru strobe then I'd probably not feel the same.  Blinking or SOD mode is ok too.  I don't think most would know SOS mode, would they?   I mean if I engaged SOS mode would most know I need help?

Blinking lights are usually a warning to stay away... :D

I like simple flashlights. So far I’ve been able to simulate strobe modes etc just with my hand or flicking the light.

But I can see professionals needing those features.
