Kind of sad, but also kind of cool!
on: December 01, 2017, 10:58:14 AM
I was setting here contemplating selling nearly all of my SAKs, and buying one custom SAK. I mean, I am not using all of these SAKs I have, they are all just setting in a box.

Now I’m not talking about dozens of knives. Only several. But still, kind of seems a waste for them to just be setting in a box in my closet. I know I will never carry any of them. They were all bought when I was searching for the “right” set up for what I wanted to carry.

I have pretty much narrowed it down to three SAKs I’ll not part with...

Wenger SI
Blue Pioneer
Silver Pioneer X

As for the rest...
ALOX
Black Pioneer
Silver Pioneer
Silver Electrician
Red Wenger Patriot x2

Cellidor
Red Ambassador
Red Tinker
Black Tinker (3D printed scales and black coating on tools and spacers)
Red Wenger Viking
Red Wenger Backpacker
Black Centurion with Swiss Bianco pocket clip

I had a few others, but my sons were given those.

Of course I have the Evogrip S54 that I won here in a challenge.  I’ll never use it, but I’ll never get rid of it either!  LOL

Oh yeah, the reason for this post...

After figuring up what I thought were proper prices if I decided to sell all those, I would only make maybe $300. That’s really not much. Enough to pay for a custom SAK for sure.

It just made me also realize how cheap SAKs are, as compared to many other “collectibles “.

I feel you. I'm not much of a collector and can't stand the feeling of seeing a tool (SAK, MT, knife or whatever) just sitting somewhere gathering dusts. I've trimmed down my SAKs to only a handful really and prefer to give them to someone who will use them more than I ever will.

One of the beauties and sadness of owning SAKs is they're affordable (to own) but cheap (to sell).

Still, those that I keep I know will be with me for life  :salute:

I got a bit bored of Victorinox and went on a wild Spyderco binge - I bought about 8 of them in the space of a few weeks. Some I really like - Dragonfly, Urban, Cat are all new to me and I love them - but they're all relatively expensive (at least in Europeland). The good thing about Victorinox / Wengers is that unless they're really boring models (red Spartan, zzzz!) they don't really decrease in value - and quite often you can make a profit selling something that's no longer made.
Spydercos on the other hand start out costing a lot and it's downhill from there. When it comes to reselling some of the ones I know I'll never use (the Chinese ones, whatever they're called) I know I'll make a loss.
So my Spyderco binge taught me that Vics are pretty cheap for what you get. It also taught me that I should have bought a Spyderco sharpener (not the entire Sharpmaker kit, just one of those triangular ceramic rods) a long time ago. The Victorinox sharpening tool (the plastic thing with a cap on it) is really useless in comparison. The soft Vic steel sharpens almost instantly with a fine Sharpmaker rod - and the blade looks good as new, which is important when reselling!

I have more SAK's than I need; but I do enjoy rotating through them. And you never know....what if you go all Pablo and twist one up? Nice to have a spare, right?

I have about 85 SAKs. I carry and use maybe about 14 or 15 of them.

One time! One time I bent an 80's bottle opener a tiny bit, then fixed!
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Wish they were that affordable where I live. A SwissChamp is like more than half a month's wage
