First Bail!
« on: December 06, 2017, 04:52:23 AM »
So I was always apprehensive of SAKs, thinking they weren't as tough or sturdy as "real" pocket knives..... Foolish of me. After carrying a Bijou my grandfathers company gave out as promotionals I was in. Now I have more than a few and they really are awesome tools and fairly priced. Though I didn't feel I could call myself much of an SAK fan without having a model with a bail. So that was fixed when I saw this guy languishing in the back corner of a roadside antiques shop in someones garage. This and a pretty tired Leatherman Charge AL for 25 bucks!

That's a REAL nice one too with the old style awl!  I believe you can date that one '57-'61   :like:    just the 2nd generation Super Tinker, previous had exposed rivets-  They didn't include the Phillips until '52

My first intact SAK with a bail was a Ranger (known in the catalogs then as a 236 maU) from the same era in roughly equal condition, not counting the blade wear (while not sharpened heavily, the blade is sharpened unevenly) and liners, which are cracked at the pivot.  I think I paid less than $12 total for the nine-piece lot (containing mostly worn out traditional pocketknives, but also a pretty decent Classic) that included it.

I would have considered $25 on each a pretty good deal, but it was an excellent deal for both. Especially given the scissor spring is still there. Curious, are the scale tools there?

The snap has gotten lazy on most of the springs, and the blades have taken a beating. But nothing is chipped or deformed. I still like to carry it on light days when I don't plan on needing to tax any of the tools.

The scales are hazy too, but I'd be a bit hazy by now too
