EDC shopping bags?
on: December 09, 2017, 08:34:21 PM
Im trying to cut down on plastic shopping bags.
It all started when my father said he was going to only use one plastic shopping bag this year, and I thought that was a pretty good idea.

For grocery shopping, its easy.
I have a few reusable nylon bags that I mostly remeber to bring when I go to the grocery store. (Se pic below)

The problem is all the other times when I just need something in a hurry or somthing unplanned.
I have tried to EDC one of the nylon bags in my jacket pocket, but its kind of bulky, and tends to unfold in the pocket.

Do you have any suggestions for a small EDC shopping bag that is really small in the pocket, or some other suggestion?

Could keep a singular plastic shopping bag in a coat pocket. In a pant pocket may make your leg sweat. I think this is a tough problem to solve. do you carry a pack with you typically?

That could be a solution. But it has some of the issues as the nylon bag I already carry. It would take up less space if I fold it well though. Only problem is that I tend to fiddle with stuff in my pockets, so it will probably unfold or be shredded pretty fast. :D

I usually dont carry a pack or bag unless Im taking something special with me, like a tablet or computer or plan to travel by bus or train.

Over here we can buy nylon bags like that which come in a small pouch that has a plastic carabiner attached to it.
It keeps them packed up untill needed and can be clipped on all sorts of things.

I like the sound of those. :tu:
Do you know what they are called? A brand name maybe?

No idea!
They are unbranded and can be bought in all kinds of stores.
Some supermarkets offer them with their name on it while some dollar stores sell them as well.
Over here that is...

Mine was bought in a cheap store and reads "I'm a shopping bag"

This is like the one I've got:

Seems like they can be bought from Chinese wholesellers too.

A few months ago I was in an outdoor shop and bought something similar. Only this time it wasn't just a bag but a backpack that folded to the same, small size.

I got a similar one last year. Pity the source is a little bit far away, it was in a Tokyu Hands store in Shinjuku, Tokyo. But I have seen them around in Germany too, now if only I could recall where...

Thanks for the pic!

I have a small backpack that folds away into a small bag by From Sea to Summit.
Its a bit big for a pocket, but great to have in a bag or a suitcase when travelig, or in a bigger backpack when camping, If you decide to take a short hike/trip away from the hotel/cottage/camp.

That's cool, I brought my wife over to see it and she told me we already have one of those in the car.

If you have access to conferences and such they sometimes give away those self pack portable ones for free. Maybe you know someone who goes.

I wish I had a few extra ones I’ll gladly mail it to you. But they are so portable they get borrowed or “disappear”. They are a big favorite with my wife's friends or I use them for various stuff like carrying lawn trimmings.

Clas Ohlson (should be available in Norway, right?) Has a decently priced one with clip. Folds fairly flat too making it less of a problem in a pocket (I have the sea to summit backpack too and it really isn't very good for pocket carry).

I checked Biltema, Jula and Europris, but not Clas Ohlson.
I just checked their webshop, and they are exactly what I was looking for. :tu:

Another option could be shopping net bags? Also, there are bags made of light cloth that fold up like a handkerchief but can hold a lot of things.

I use this method for the plastic bags from shops:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rgUADYIpUIQ
It is a way to fold the shop bags into a triangle for easy storage or carry.

I also have a few nylon ones that fold into themselves --- these were usually add on items from on-line shopping.

How about a common shopping bag rolled into a keychain fob?

I just showed that video to my wife who said 'very clever, not at all practical, do I look like I've got that much spare time?'.  :D
