Leatherman Wave, upgrading the blade steel.
on: December 13, 2017, 10:13:26 AM
Hi,

I'm a member of Edge Matters forum in the UK and advised to check out the Multi tool forum. I've been a SAK and multi tool fan for years.

Just bought a new Leatherman Wave with bit set as a Christmas pressie for my wife to give me. I've owned the original wave for years but fancied the newer model too. Only thing I would change is the blade steel. I've discovered there's a company in the US that customize Leatherman tools. They're selling a very nice Damascus plain edge blade for the Wave in their sale at $50. Despite 'shipping world wide' this seems to exclude the UK when I go through checkout..

I emailed them to be told I'd need to go through their UK distributor. Unfortunately their UK distributor reply was that they do not sell the blades, only the complete modified Leathermans.

Since I've drawn a blank, do I have any other options for an aftermarket blade in a quality steel like damascus or s30v? Loki was mentioned on the Edge Matters forum but can't find any info. Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Myles

I've read that the S30V blade from a Charge will slot straight straight in to a Wave, so that is another potential source.

Welcome to the forum Myles. :)

The S30V blade from a Charge TTi or 154CM blade from a Charge AL/ALX should drop straight into a Wave.  Try loki-mobile here for blades: https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,64314.0.html  You'll need 5 posts to be able to send PMs.

Thanks for all the help gents and the warm welcome. Will look to get a Charge blade. Nothing wrong with 420 but would just fancy this small mod to distinguish it further from my old Wave.

Just found Loki-mobile on ebay. He's got just what I want. Unfortunately I'm blocked from bidding being outside Uk but hopefully will be able to source one from him in time.  I hope this moding is easier than it looks.

Penfold, welcome here!
Do you have access to the security version of Torx T10 bits/wrenches? You'll need these to do the (otherwise straightforward) mod. I believe Loki also sells those if needed.

I do have a set of torx security bits but looks like I will need a second T10. Thanks for the advice. Looking forward to seeing how 154cm holds up. If given the choice 154cm or S30V?

You're welcome :hatsoff:. I only recently upgraded my Wave to 154CM and lack any experience of S30V. Maybe more experienced members can chime in here?

Probably easier to deal with Loki on here.

154cm blade and torx bits arrived through the post yesterday from Loki (great service btw) Blade fitted without any trouble. Few strokes on the strop and the 154cm blade is hair popping sharp.  :like:

Thanks again for all the advice chaps.

Just now seeing this.  Glad Loki got you sorted out.  I carry a TTi and honestly I cannot really "tell" a difference in performance between it and my Charge AL with 154CM.  Both get really sharp and both seem to keep their edges equally well.  I haven't had to sharpen either blade as I tend to strop every so often or after any particularly hard day of use.  I think you'll be please with the 154CM blade depending of your usage.
