This was the Spirit shelf the day before the renovations started:

(Pic was taken as reference to refill the display after the work is done)

Artificial light only...
Rarely a nice pic like that

It went pitch black outside about 1.5hours ago.

Left to right:
Spirit RT

Spirit S BO (rotating clip sheath)

Spirit (regular stainless, butter blade and scissors, regular leather sheath)
(Image removed from quote.)

Very nice Nick!  :like: Do you use them all or?
No! :dwts:

The S was my top piece untill I received the RT. I'm now slinging back and forth between the 2.

The regular Spirit get's used under normal conditions. When I need to wreck havok, I'll grab my Swisstool X, which was bought dirt cheap in a very used, but still decent, condition.

They all (not the Swisstool X) share the same shelf in the Vic Cabinet.

Pic taken before renovations started:
(Image removed from quote.)

I use my user for general havok and also light duty construction/destruction, the others are collection/spares, but I hope to get some patina on the XBS when it gets here.  ;)

I sure hope the new one has no CC, I'd hate to have to return it.

Would you return it for that reason only?? :sa:

The US is quite far for shipping a BO S...

Getting it from the MTO headquarters in good ol' Canada.  :MTO: 🇨🇦

And yes, the cap crimper is ridiculous, and I am boycotting them.  :P  :D

I still don't get why Leatherman and Vic and whoever else focus so much attention on a feature that benefits so few people, I mean how many people need an EOD cap crimper, to put that many tools out with that stupid useless thing? Waste of resources if you ask me, they can keep them.  :P

After an image search I did not see any XBS without CC, also noticed the pins seem to be black on the stock photos but don't appear black on the MTO version, so another image search showed all photos I could find had blackened pins. LeaF (member here) has some photos that came up in the search that looked like the handles have some marks where the pins were assembled also, I will see if I can find those.

LeaF's Spirit XBS appears to have blackened pins, but one side looks like some has rubbed off during assembly?

Maybe its just the image... but Grants last image also looks like the pins are black. And TBH, I would be surprised if they were silver and very disappointed if this was due to abrasion.

Microbe also posted about the XBS, and in the video, the Spirit is an older version with logo on the pliers, Vic shield before the name on the handles, but still with the nasty cap crimper. So we know there is at least one X version in the older style, pre-2010.

Mine isn't an XBS - it's a couple of years old so is a BO X CC (3.0224.3CCH).  It does have the cap crimper and it has the older (?) logo placement on the handles.  It also has circular marks around the pivots, and the finish on the pivots isn't perfectly black.  IIRC, the orbital riveter head has a rubber ring around the outside to compress the handles while the rivets are formed and this marks the finish.

Thanks H, good info. It seems my RT has escaped this blemish, must be the hardness difference btw PVD and black oxide?

Is there something that effectively removes the black oxide residue?

I remember getting a lot of it off with WD40 and a rag with the Surge, and then letting the rest wear off with time and use, but what about if you wanted to just clean it up nicely for display, any suggestions?
