Homemade knifehandle
on: December 13, 2017, 09:59:12 PM
So I have have gotten in to sort of a knife "making" hobby. As I live in an apartment I cant really make my own knife blades so I buy the blades and make the handles myself. I dont have a goal, just as a hobby to keep my hands busy when I get bored.

On my latest work in progress I wanted to try something new, and since I got a nice set of woodcarving tools after my grandfather I figured I would try to carve some sami inspired things on the reindeer antler on the handle.

My experience is that carving antler is not easy. Not happy with the result, but I dont hate it either.

What do you guys think?
And if anyone has any tips its very much appreciated

Very impressive, better scrimshaw than I could manage with my gimpy hands, what did use for colouring it?

Thanks! Will probable get better when I figure out which tool is best and find a good technique. For the coloring I just used a pencil to fill the pattern and then quickly sanded down the rest just to be able to see the carving. Its not finished as I need some oil paint or something to color it with.
Antler is very hard so it was not easy to get "clean" lines. But practice makes perfect I guess.

That looks nice RF,
Are you going to make a sheath?
What oil will you use on the handle? (I use linseed oil on most things)
Everything’s adjustable

Thanks! Someday I will make a sheath, but I am not really sure how I'm gonna do it so will probably wing it. I have a can of danish oil that looked really nice on another handle I made so I'm just gonna stick to that.

Thanks! I suspect it will get kind of addictive, like most of what's going on in this forum.

Spot on, fortunately I started just before I discovered this place, so I can't blame them for that

I think it's just natural progression that next you will want to make the whole knife at some stage, enjoy the ride  :salute:

If I move to a house someday and not an apartment I would make the whole knife from start. But for now it's early in the prosess so I'm just buying cheap blades to learn and maybe modifying a little
