I've drank the coolaid
on: December 16, 2017, 03:58:52 AM
Just stumbled onto this site. I've been picking up leathermans recently while Cabelas had the promos.  I think I'll be modding some shortly. A mini-surge and modified rebar seem to be in order.

Thanks!

I did some more comps, and I might be ahead to do a Re-Charge TTI.  No sense is starting with a Wave and then swapping the main blades to Charge ones when I could just start with a Charge TTI and be money ahead. They would both be new purchases at some point down the road. I need to pump the brakes a bit after I pick up a Rebar right now though.

Or, I need to decide if I really care about the cutting hook and higher quality steel blade. If not, wave/mini surge is the way to go.

I'm gonna be keeping an eye out for a $20 off $100 promo from Cabelas. I have $35 cabelas bucks from the Surge I picked up today.  The Rebar and bit kit/extender are gonna be it for a bit.  I've made good use of the current deals. Lol.

I also had a question pop up. Is there room in a TTI or Wave to add a modified awl and package opener after I remove the scissors?  Or is it a 1:1 trade?

How about in a Rebar. Is there room to add modified charge scissors without losing anything, or will I have to give up something?

Wow,DT.  Thanks for all that info.

Is there any slack in a stock Rebar?  Just wondering if I could stuff a pair of scissors without removing anything?  I'm guessing not. I won't have my Rebar for a week or two to examine.

Thanks Poncho.  Now I'll just have to wait for the Rebar to arrive and the piggy bank to fill back up for a TTi.  I'm assuming the TTi pliers will fir the Rebar with no issues.

Valid assumption, the Rebar pliers are a little bit wider and thicker in the widest bit at the plier main pivot than the Charge/Wave ones, which are also more rounded off generally.

What DT said :D I also have a Rebar with that plier head but I got that one in a trade so I can't comment on how easily it went in :salute:

But FYI getting a plier head back into a Rebar frame is a bit of a pain :ahhh :D

Good to know.  I'm not 100% sure I'm going to be taking these apart myself.  I might be soliciting the help of others with more experience.  I'd like to get pliers back in the rebar.  I was hoping to stash them in the car emergency kit.

It can be, yes, due to the plier springs in the handles and the washers. I find it helps to assemble in the closed pliers position: apply finger or vise pressure on the handle sides at the plier pivot level, then insert the rear end of a 5 mm drill bit opposite the pivot hole side where you insert the pin, then insert the pin and wriggle the drill bit while pushing the pin into place and varying the finger/vise pressure, all at the same time of course :D :D (cover the vise jaws with inner tube or other soft material to avoid scratches on the handles).

Thanks again for the input.  That sounds simple, but I'm sure it took some frustration to figure out that sequence.  It also sounds like a reason to pick up a Crunch since you needed vise grips

On a side note, Victornix has OUTSTANDING customer service.  I emailed them and asked to purchase an extra 91mm scissor.  They put a one time complimentary set in the mail same day.  The small gesture worked.  I was on the fence with springing for their knives for game processing, but that gesture sealed the deal.

Also I am intrigued that they sent you extra scissors  Let us know for sure that it is an extra set of scissors and not just the spring :tu:

Will do. They definitely said pair of scissors twice, but we'll see.

I was also looking at some online reviews of Charge vs Wave. I was surprised how much larger the Charge was.  Is it as noticeable as it looks?  I know the weight is similar, I'm wanting this tool to be carried a lot, likely pocket carried. I'm a bit concerned about the profile and thinking about changing my mind to a Wave base tool.

Good news and bad news. Vic scissors arrived and they were full scissors.  Bad news they were the wrong ones.

A piece of straw on the end and they can be pocket carried though

well that was unexpected   :ahhh

But I agree with Poncho in that they are very nice and useful to carry around, for instance like I did a few years back
(I had a tiny winey nail file with sheath and the scissors fit perfectly in that sheath, and I carried them in the shoulder bag for emergency detailed cutting until I gifted them to someone who I'd knew would use them more and carry them in their purse)    :salute:

I wasn't expecting them to send 91mm parts as such, they aren't like the SOG of old in that respect.

At least you have a cool pair of SwissCard scissors to EDC.  :tu:

Yea, I'm not complaining.  They didn't cost me anything. They just got my hopes up. I hated the idea of having to buy a tool just for those scissors.

What is the cheapest way to get a pair of 91mm scissors?

I'll check it out.  Those don't look like they're 91mm, but I'm new to SAK.

Looks like Google got me. I found one that was listed at 3.5".  Their website lists it at 4" and Amazon calls it a 91mm model.
