I have seen the light and have the Spirit
on: November 05, 2008, 12:38:02 PM
Well after much 'um'ing and 'ahh'ing I finally bit the bullet and purchased a Spirit.

My impressions – a bit bigger and heavier than I imagined but a mighty impressive piece of kit just the same. From the size and weight point of view I am glad I didn't buy a Swisstool.

Everything opens and closes with a positive click with no sign of sloppiness. Its finish is just incredible. I reckon I could perform surgery with it today, sterilize it afterwards and do some more tomorrow. The handles when opened as pliers felt like – well, pliers. The most comfortable I have used on a multitool.

I have a 'new' Wave which I bought without looking at the entire market because of limited offerings (Leatherman seems to be the most popular where I live). I don't (in hindsight) like the one handed blades and there are other things that don't appeal to me. I also have a Juice KF4 and a Gerber MP400 that I picked up on the 'net.

All of these have characteristics that appeal to me but for mine the Spirit is the pick of the crop. I wish it had been my first purchase. It will be my last. I could have save a mob of money. These things are expensive in Oz.

All in all I am pretty pleased.

I am now going to sell others as they are pretty much redundant for me. I am unsure about selling the KF4 but may do so if the price is right. Seems it is a collectors piece. I suspect I may have bought the last one in Australia when I purchased it. And it was bloody expensive (really really expensive). They are all in very good condition with nary a mark on them.

Any takers - Aussies would be easier.

Good to hear to hear to really like the Spirit as many others here, including myself.  I am curious though--what is it that you don't like about the one-hand opening blades of the Wave?

I waited three years and finally got one and wondered "Why did you wait sooo long."  :bnghd:
Now I have other MTs that I want to get rid of.

If only everyone would see the light... :twak:

Well NutSAK I don't like the one handed opening blade cos it makes me feel like a bit of a Rambo - knife at the ready and all that. I originally used an Schrade Old Timer (small one) that I found in a paddock one day. That was mighty handy I can tell you. I figured that the all round versatility of an MT would be a good idea. The size of the knife is I must say a bit scarey (compared to the Old Timer). I was not really after a big knife and really not one that I could deploy quite as quickly as that. I have not had a need for it in the past and don't really need it now.

I am really after a 'multitool' for its multiple uses not a multitool with two dirty big knives that seem to be at the centre of its many attributes.

And that is where the Spirit succeeds. It has a knife which is as 'equal' as the many other bits and pieces on the tool. The one thing it doesn't have is tweezers which I reckon are one of the mighty attributes of a SAK. Simple but effective.

Even though I have had the Spirit fo a while now I still sit and fiddle with it. It really is a brilliant piece of design and construction.

Thats all for now

OK. Thanks for explaining.  I understand your point on the Wave's blades.

As for tweezers, just snap a Victorinox 58mm knife (preferably the Rambler :pok:) to your keychain and you're set!

Or do what I do, and get a Vic Explorer Plus to go along with either your Spirit or Spirit S.  The explorer plus has a plain edge blade (lacking on the spirit) or a nice pair of scissors (lacking on the spirit s...and lets face it, lacking on the spirit as well haha).  It also has a magnifying glass, toothpick, tweezers, pin, pen, microscrewdriver, corckscrew, and all purpose hook (all things that the spirit lacks).  I find these two to be perfect compliments and really get you prepared for EVERYTHING.  It is a tiiiiny bit big at 4 layers, but nothing over cumbersome.  If only they still made the Yeoman.... ::) :D

Relatively expensive unfortunately, and the advantage of going from 4 layers to 3 layers just isn't worth the layout cost.  I got a great shape explorer plus, and then replaced all of the components in it, for a total of 20 bucks.  Can't get a yeomen for that!! (if you can, pleeease tell me where  :gimme:)

I do love it too. Now, if only they could imprint a ruler on some implement (e.g. back of the file), add a pocket clip, replace the rivets with normal fasteners, and turn the (spear-point PE) blade into an OH one... :) On a second thought, I believe what would suite me best would be an exact scaled-down version of ST-X (plus the OH part)... ::) Boy am I torn by this little piece of engineering that is the Spirit... I know that my TTi covers all of my needs but I just can't get the Spirit off my mind and hands (and pockets, eventually)...
