"Paring"down............
« on: March 21, 2019, 02:54:20 AM »
Thought I would post something a bit different than usual. Most of these are paring knives with a few grapefruit knives thrown in.Most are old and a few are new.One is a bartender's knife and there is a group of clam knives. One of the grapefruit knives(the Japanese double ended one)has double blades fitted closely together that is designed to cut along either side of the grapefruit segment to make separation easier.
#1 A Camillus paring knife.
#2 A Camillus bartender's knife whose guard houses a beverage can opener on one side and a cap lifter on the other with a blade that is serrated and has a double point for use as an olive fork.
#3 A Cattaraugus paring knife with checkered plastic handle.
#4 An old Dexter paring knife.

#1 Dreizback(J.A.Henckels)curved paring knife.I've noticed most European paring knives are curved whereas most USA made ones are straight.
#2 E.Warther & Sons paring knife with engine turned blade. Warther is an old name in wood carving knives beginning before 1900.They are still in business in Dover Ohio. Their website is worth visiting just to see the hand carved train that Ernest Warther made.
#3 Freidrich Herder & Son grapefruit knife with their trademark spade logo.
#4 Grasoli Solingen with a fancy carved wood handle.

Page last:
#1 Unmarked paring knife with unusual bone handles.
#2 Another unmarked knife. What is unusual about this one is the blade edge was put on the wrong side as there is evidence of a partial stamp where the edge is supposed to be.
#3 Marked WMF(?) Henckels. Not sure what that stands for;maybe a business logo.
#4 Closeup of logo.

Awesome collection, again, Ray!

And I cannot convey how happy I was to see that the thread was actually about paring knives. There have been a disturbing number of threads recently about downsizing collections and such. Nothing wrong with that, but it's a bit depressing to a collector. Your knife collections are just outstanding! Thanks for sharing it with MT.o.  :salute:

Thanks to all for the kind words and sometimes words can be a little confusing;especially in the English language.Spell Check makes it even more confusing! Don't know how many times I see writings that have words inserted that SOUND like the correct one but are not.Even the word "pare" isn't exempt:we also have the fruit named,"pear" that sounds identical.
As for the paring knives;I don't know how I started accumulating them but it seems like I must be magnetic and knives are just naturally attracted to me. :D Most of them(including the new ones)were bought for a dollar or two.The prize was the Warther. That particular knife cost me $2 and they retailed at the time for about $40. Strangely enough the one my wife likes the best is an old cheap Chinese parer that I got to cut out patterns in my shop with. She uses that one all the time.
