Home solution for loose pliers pivot! Experiment!
on: December 26, 2017, 04:12:49 PM
I, by chance, think I have discovered something crazy sh@t about leatherman pliers pivots.

Whoever have loose pliers pivot, sound out. Let's do some experiment! I have tried on numerous pliers, all of them works.

Yes. I would actually believe so. That method scars up the pivot. I have tried to repair some with that method, not all of them works. I am just waiting for more popcorns and then access to my computer. Let's keep the suspense up. 😂😂

Sounds good, Even Leatherman and their hydraulic press scars the pivot a bit when they do warranty work.

OK. First of all, I will just say that this is done at your own risk and I will not be responsible etc blah blah blah... ;) It probably doesnt work on seriously loose pliers.. probably nothing will..

Here goes. Get a pair of small locking pliers/ vise grip similar to this. Irwin's are great.

Do some marking like this on the 'dead' pivot end. So that you know later when you do the adjustments, you know its not a placebo effect. That leatherman plier was from another mod, my cut up wave. I have since given it a new set of plier it deserve.  :)

Next, you will need to turn the whole pivot and make sure you only grip the pivot. Thats why you need a smaller vise grip. Cushion the surface with something so you protect the surface. If this fails, at least you can still send it for warranty claim.

Next, you turn. Clock wise or anti clockwise, I forgot. it probably doesnt matter. Either side it will loosen or tighten the pivot.

It had worked on my OG wave, Juice, Skeletool, Wingman, numerous modern Wave type pliers. I actually got so excited the I dug out all of my loose pliers to try. All worked. I have absolutely no idea behind the mechanics, physics nor design behind this pivot.

I know. It sounds too simple and incredibly unbelievable. Give it a try and report back. Try it especially on the Wingman sprung pliers as most of the time they are bad. On the surface, it solved the problem. Tomorrow I am going to take one of it to use extensively to see how it holds up.

Enjoy. Thanks for the popcorn.. *burp*

Brilliant !   :hatsoff:

Just tried it on a spare set of pliers and it works great. You can easily dial in the amount of tightness depending on how far you turn it. It didn't take much of a turn to tighten these up.    :tu:

Fascinating... excellent find. This suggests the pivot is simply screwed in. One wonders however how self-unscrewing during normal use is prevented. If with thread locking fluid, this might need to be renewed to make the repair more durable, for which outright disassembly would be required...

Edit: this also suggests spacers might be fabricated out of bronze, to fit the pivot surfaces almost completely, e.g. using a lathe. This combined with a largish vise grip might work.

If turning one way tightens the plier heads.... is anyone willing to go the other way to see if they can disassemble them?  :pok:
I would be interested to see them apart.

I seriously do not think they are screw on. It could be the surface between the dead side are somewhat sloped or at a very slight angle. Turning the whole pivot simply close up the gap or widen it. There no way to unscrew the pivot in the manner we are discussing here as we are turning both side together.

I've tightened a few in the past by laying the plier head flat on my anvil and tapping off centre with my peening hammer, worked both times with little noticable damage  :tu:

Beg to differ... the pivot could go all the way through and have screw thread matching some on one of the plier halves...

Not quite agree.. As I mentioned when we turn the pivot, both side turns at the same rate. So there is no unscrewing of anything.

Hmmm... both pivot ends turning at the same time strongly suggests it is one piece (somewhat against my expectations), or maybe two pieces with a snap fit or screwed together very tightly. Tightening when turning one way (presumably clockwise?) kind of suggests (more) screw thread, but you're right, circumferentially sloping surfaces could also work...

I have a PST with a minute wiggle in the pliers. I'll see if I can find out once I'm back home from skiing (see outdoors thread :D).
