Loose plier heads?! What the...

Oh! I see!

I stumbled in the Leatherman section here! >:D

Great find though...

I forgot to mention I had tried this on my Gerbers, worked on none of them..

  :D
What about SwissTools? Oh that's right, they don't develop plier play or any other problems because they are swiss.
Steal someone else's joke :twak:
:D
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

I, am a electrical technician by trade. I need my cutters to cut soft copper cable.. They simply does not cut well.. I didn't think tightening them would make any difference....

If turning one way tightens the plier heads.... is anyone willing to go the other way to see if they can disassemble them?  :pok:
I would be interested to see them apart.

I seriously do not think they are screw on. It could be the surface between the dead side are somewhat sloped or at a very slight angle. Turning the whole pivot simply close up the gap or widen it. There no way to unscrew the pivot in the manner we are discussing here as we are turning both side together.
Beg to differ... the pivot could go all the way through and have screw thread matching some on one of the plier halves...

Not quite agree.. As I mentioned when we turn the pivot, both side turns at the same rate. So there is no unscrewing of anything.
Hmmm... both pivot ends turning at the same time strongly suggests it is one piece (somewhat against my expectations), or maybe two pieces with a snap fit or screwed together very tightly. Tightening when turning one way (presumably clockwise?) kind of suggests (more) screw thread, but you're right, circumferentially sloping surfaces could also work...

I have a PST with a minute wiggle in the pliers. I'll see if I can find out once I'm back home from skiing (see outdoors thread :D).

Today, I tried on a plier that was really loose. Probably beyond repair. I did the same method again. I did dial it to a certain extent it was tighter but any more, it would "pop" loose again. So the, "circumferentially sloping surfaces" should be at work. Intentionly or not by leatherman, it's brilliant.

So if you were to mark the other side (the one that moves) say, when the pliers are fully closed (as a reference) you should see the line move after adjustment?

I think the mechanics of this are simple. As the pliers get used the pivot which is round gets slightly oval in shape and pliers loosen. When we turn the pivot the oval fills the round hole a bit effectively tightening the pivot again.

I too think that is the possible reason. The sloping theory is just too complicated to implement. What the heck, so how many have been fixed? ☺️

It has play in it just like some of my Leatherman pliers. It's in really good shape in fact it looks like it was hardly used. Some minor wear on the wire cutters.

I think I have to agree with that hypothesis too. Earlier today I submitted a PST to the treatment - and which better tool to use for it than a Crunch? :D Gripping the pivot tightly with two spacers between it and the jaws and turning resulted in nigh-on disappearance of the somewhat alarming PST pliers pivot wobble. Great tip Sam :2tu:
