[SAK Mod] Every Manager needs a capable assistant...
on: December 29, 2017, 02:22:10 AM
The Victorinox Manager is, for me, the ultimate multitool that can be carried with absolutely minimal mass & bulk; you forget it's there until it's called upon to perform one of the many tasks it can.

But it's still a fairly small tool, and it doesn't always have to be carried alone, so I decided to make a 91mm, 3-layer accompaniment for it:

An interesting mix of tools, that I'm willing to bet noöne will agree with, but then when have two folk on here ever agreed upon a toolset!  :pok:  ;)

So why these tools? Since the Manager already covers the following tools, any 'add-on' for a Manager doesn't need them:
  • Small blade
  • Small Philips screwdriver
  • "Cap lifter"
  • Nail file
  • Scissors (yes, they're tiny, but they're better than no scissors, and I recently tested them, and my patience, on large sheets of wrapping paper this Xmas - their sharpness makes up for a lot!)
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Tweezer
  • Pen

This new SAK therefore features these tools:
  • Large blade
  • Larger Philips screwdriver (admittedly backside)
  • Combo Tool to add larger flathead screwdriver & can-opener (not as good as the dedicated tin-opener, but it allows a whole layer to be omitted and actually works reasonably well)
  • Pliers
  • Woodsaw
  • Toothpick
  • Needle

Wire-stripping, writing & small flathead screwdriver functionality is duplicated, and the wonderful hook & awl are missing. This particular one is a present for my brother, whom I recommended the Manager too and who has thoroughly embraced its utility; I'll ask him if he'd like me to grind & polish the backside small flathead down into an awl after I reveal this surprise gift.

Here's an overhead shot for an idea of thickness:

The only thing left to do is name it, and what else could it be other than...

the Assistant Manager!

You're on a roll!
I've also made a strange SAK intended to be carried as part of a combo.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!

Awesome mod George... unique tool set :like:

It is also possible to use the awl behind the saw instead of the fine screwdriver...

Thanks!

And thank you for bringing up the awl; it raises a very important point which I probably should have mentioned in the original post!

I too thought about just putting the awl in behind the saw, however...
The awl normally sits on the opener layer spring, which slopes upwards toward the keyring hole:

The saw spring, crucially, does not have this upward tendency:

(It has a little 'flick up' at the end, but that isn't sufficient for our purposes.)

If the awl were fitted there, it would look something like this:

This is a mock-up using a loose awl slipped into the slot on the Assistant Manager. It isn't butted up against the base of the screwdriver as it's a few tenths of a mil wider (another issue, but a minor one really). Anyway, as I hope the photo conveys, if it were in place, the nail-nick would be completely subsumed between the liners.

So, indeed, it does fit in there behind the saw. Permanently in there... With no hope of being able to prise it out for use...!

Or... have I missed something? Is there a way to make that nail-nick usable?

Am I right in assuming that the saw layer sits beside the blade layer? If so, make a small opening on the liner in between... just enough to access the nail nick... similar to that found on the spartan or tinker...

Edited:

Just looked at your pic again... my bad... just reverse the saw and pliers layer...

I’ve done it on my Yeoman WS mod...

Here’s a close up pic to better illustrate what I meant...

Oooh, that is a lovely mod! The Yeoman really should have a woodsaw, shouldn't it?  :tu:

Indeed, as you've seen, the pliers prevent your useful suggestion - they need to be in the middle layer to save having to make an unsightly cut-out in an outer liner for the pivot rivet, and they're (marginally) more comfortable to use in this position.

Thanks for your suggestion though; keep 'em coming!

No need to search the forum. Thanks to Magentus, it has a... distinctive name.
Anyway, here it is, the Mini Pabsman.  ::)

I don't need the pliers, and while you can pair this with a 58mm SAK, I actually had a 93mm like a Pioneer in mind for the combo.
Hooked, like everyone else. ;)

All hail the hook!
