How do you stand a SAK in your pocket??
on: January 05, 2018, 11:49:19 PM
I am currently EDCing my SAKMC Unit, the Centurion, in an old Leatherman sheath.

I picked up a new Swiza off of eBay just to see what it’s all about. I brought it to work to play with it a bit just to see how it does. It’s in the bottom of my right front pocket. My gosh that feels horrible just laying at the bottom of my pocket.

How do you guys stand that??

For me it depends a lot on the pants. Small pockets in slim fit jeans are not good for pocket carry.

For the SAK’s that have the keychain ring, some folks use a suspension clip so it’ll hang along the side edge of your pocket, out of the way.

Some are better than others Z Unit, I carry the Climber or smaller in the bottom of my pocket, also the SwissChamp of all things, with the backtools against my leg. Medium size or awkward feeling knives I divide my pocket with a safety pin so they ride vertically, also carry the Spirit this way.  :salute:

Right now I’m trying out the lobster clasp and I hook it to a belt loop and drop it in my pocket. Seems to work pretty well.

My preference for pocket carry is: 84mm length, single layer cellidor or two layer alox.
Very comfy front pocket carry. An alox bantam is great for shirt pockets.

IMO knives that aren´t too wide (up to 3 layers) or too large (up to 93 mm) are best carried in a back pocket or a vest pocket. Anything larger needs a belt sheath, a clip, or a dangler. Personally I don´t like pocket clips and danglers.

PS I always wear blue jeans. Not the very skinny type, nor the very baggy type, but somewhere in between. Some people prefer the fifth pocket (watch pocket /condom pocket)  for knife carry. I find it even more uncomfortable than front pocket carry; most times the fifth pocket is too small for anything beyond 58mm and the knife may slip out when you sit down.

The problem with larger objects placed vertically in a front pocket is they hamper movement. Comfortable carry depends heavily on your daily activities.

Thanks. This one is a gift from a friend and it's his first attempt at making a pocket caddy. I carry another caddy in my left pocket that houses my main carry folder and a small multitool.

I live in a tropical country where its hot and humid so people dont usually wear jackets. I also don't like sending out telltale signs that I'm carrying any knife or tool in my pockets with clips sticking out or shining. So pocket caddies are the most discrete and comfortable for me  :D

I agree. The purpose and means ought to fit a person's profile. Since I'm mostly inside the office and sitting down usually, my caddies are comfortable for use. This one is in my left pocket these days, a Spyderco Tenacious and Leatherman Juice S2

I do like the suspension clips but this Swiza just laying in bottom of pocket is driving me nuts. Haha

I go 84mm as a rule, loose in my pocket. I notice it so little that sometimes I think I've lost it! Even a Spartan feels too big. I carry my Handyman at work in my right cargo pocket. I hardly notice it there but I suppose I'm used to it because somehow it's really heavy and annoying in my left pocket.

When I carried a SwissChamp a long time ago I either hung it from a large safety pin from the top hem of my pocket or looped a lanyard over my belt. I was a bit short of imagination and either way was cumbersome and fiddly.

I really :like: an0n's pocket caddies here - never seen such things before.

Why doesn't Victorinox make SAKs with clips, especially on the big ones?
Wenger used to

I stick everything in my front pocket. 58-111mm, 1-4 layers. Some of the bulkier SAKs will seem a bit large, but after a day or so, I seem to just get used to them.

Just a small personal observation.  ...........I would not be at all surprised that when God created the Earth & the heavens, that the SwissChamp was the tool he used. .............. :hatsoff:

I've carried a pocket knife of one sort or another in my right front pocket for decades. Don't notice it. The keys take up more space. The current EDC is a Wenger Traveler. The 85mm length rides better than the 91mm Vics.

For front pocketing my knives without key ring/clip/lanyard, including a large Case Trapper, I just keep my wallet in my pocket and the knife sits vertical along side the wallet.

Nice one zrxoa, my two edc sak’s are a farmer and pioneerX, and I’ve always liked a pocket clip carry, so I made them into a pocket clip carry, best of both worlds!

A Soldier/Pioneer in the pocket I really don’t notice, unless it’s not there. Then I’m always tapping my pocket looking for it.

What bothers me more in my pocket is the ridiculously huge car key fobs the makers insist on nowadays. Hate those things. Do they really need to be so large? I don’t carry a purse.

I carry knives vertically in denim pouches in my left front pocket of my jeans and have no problem. I generally will have 2 in my left front pocket and they stay in a vertical position.
